The sun may be shining and the lake may be calling, but local figure skaters are spending their summers preparing for the winter season.

A trio of locals had the chance to display how they've spent their summer vacation thus far at the Prairie Skate 2011 Figure Skating Competition in Virden at the brand-new Virden Multi Purpose Recreational Facility last weekend.

Madison McCallum competed in three events, tying for second in the Category D women jumps with 110 points, ending up sixth in the novice women free skate with 42.71 points and finishing seventh in the novice women short program with 24.59 points.

As well, Devon Borody had a second-place showing in the juvenile women free skate. scoring 25.09, just behind Moosomin's Casey McCormac, who notched 25.84.

Lastly, competing in two of the deeper pools of competition, Alexa Hulme was 23rd in pre-novice women short program with 17.24 points and 37th in the free skate with 24.33 points.

McCallum said that she was happy with her overall performance, but being the first competition with new routines, picked out areas to work on as well.

"I'm happy with where I am now, because I know that there are many things I can improve on for the upcoming competitions," said McCallum. "I know that I'm not at my max right now, and there's lots of room for improvement."

McCallum said among the areas she hopes to improve are the consistency of her jumps. She added that at practice on Monday, she's already started to make adjustments based on the weekend.

"We changed some of my spins around, so they should be better and more consistent," said McCallum. "They should be better.

"I want to, overall, improve my skating, my performance, and the experience for the audience."

McCallum said that she tried to keep her expectations reasonable considering where she is in the season.

"I set a bar for myself to achieve past, and I feel that I performed my programs well," said McCallum. "It was the first competition of the year, so I feel that not everything was perfect, but I'm very satisfied with the way that I performed."

McCallum felt that her skating was effective in both of her new programs, which she was glad to compete with for the first time.

"I just really wanted to put them out there, and perform them, and skate them like I've been training," said McCallum. "I'm very happy and felt that that was a very strong part of my weekend."

McCallum said that she's been working on the new programs in April, though the originals don't necessary look exactly like what was performed over the weekend.

"Lots of changes have been made, but I've been training them very hard all summer," said McCallum, who has been training in Brandon all summer, skating four or five days each week.

McCallum said that she did get some rest between the end of the 2010-11 season and the kickoff of this current campaign, taking a few weeks off.

"I feel ready to keep training hard," said McCallum.

McCallum plans to keep the same programs all through the year, and at the end of the season, will review them to see if she wants to keep the programs or try something new. There's plenty of work that goes into a new routine, though.

"From year-to-year, there are always changes in the world of figure skating," said McCallum. "We always have to incorporate those things into my new program.

"We get new music. We have to allow space for my skating to improve and grow in my program, and then I keep adding more difficult things."

McCallum said that one element she's working on for this year's program is the triple jump.

Meanwhile, Borody said that she enjoyed herself at the competition, and was happy with how she perfomed.

"(My favourite part was) landing my jumps," said Borody.

Borody added that she felt coach MaryAnne Penner was proud of her after the skate.
