By?Simon Brett
Felony & Mayhem, $14.94,?224 pages
If there was an award for best spoof or parody, this book would take top honors, no question. Master of mystery Simon Brett returns us to those golden days between the wars, and the aristocracy, which generally had more money than brains. Of course, they also had honor and excelled on the cricket field, which was vastly more important!
Multiple laughs on every page will accompany the reader through this delightful misadventure and mysterious tale. Ducal sprogs Devereux (Blotto) and his sister, the super-clever Honoria (Twinks) combine their talents (he?s the brawn, she?s the brains) to bring about a bloodless coup in Mitteleuropia. Ex-King Sigismund has found temporary refuge at Tawcester Towers, ancestral seat of the Dukes of Tawcester, and then (horrors!) his daughter, Ex-Princess Ethelinde, is kidnapped. With handy and loyal chauffeur, Corky Froggett, they set off to rescue the damsel in distress.
The ex-princess fancies herself in love with the empty-headed Blotto, who finally persuades her that only marriage to Transcarpathia?s almost ex-Crown Prince Fritz-Ludwig can fulfill her noble sense of honor ? and destiny. Once home again, the duo capture the perpetrator of the original crime and turn him into the local constabulary, leaving them free to embark on their next misadventure. Gilbert & Sullivan, where are you when we need you? Here?s the perfect plot for your next operetta!
