The Year of Motherhood: Serving Our City Together

In the eleven months of my year of motherhood challenge, I never imagined that this one would give me the most trouble. ?I would have looked ahead to November and thought ? EASY. ?I love our city. ?I love to serve. ?This will be a no brainer.

Instead it was super hard. ?I?m not sure if it was the time of year that made it hard. ?Are we too busy now? ?Oh that?s a lame excuse to not serve. ?Or is it my kids ages? ?Are they too young to get it? ?Yeah, even lamer. ?Kids only know what you teach them. ?Did I just not see the value in this?

None of my excuses seem to matter. ?I learned a lot about myself and my kids by looking back on this month. ?I learned that:

#1 Your kids only know how to serve if you teach them. ?When I take a meal to someone after they have had a baby I usually don?t bring my kids. ?It?s just easier that way, y?all know what I mean! ?But, unfortunately they never see me buy my favorite food for someone else instead of our family.

One thing that we?ve started this year is we have money jars and each of the kids has a spend and a give jar. ?They kick and scream each time we have them put money in the give jar, but I know that in a few weeks when we get out the Compassion International catalog and all pick out a goat for a family they will LOVE it!

#2 Kids are resilient. ?My kids threw a screaming fit when my mom and I took them shopping to buy presents for other kids for our Operation Christmas Child boxes. ?I told them they couldn?t get anything for themselves and you would have though I told them they had to eat broccoli for a month. ?They were SO distraught. ?And I was SO frustrated with them! ?BUT by the end of the shopping trip they were really putting all their heart and soul into picking out gifts for little boys around the world. ?I went from frustrated mom to very proud mom during that one shopping trip.

#3 Serving takes planning.??My mom came up one weekend to visit and we took our kids to fill up her shoeboxes. ?After that I planned on our family serving with a local business here that serves food to homeless people, and of course I kept forgetting to call and then before you know it, it?s Thanksgiving. ?Yes, we served by filling up shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, but our family didn?t serve together in the way I imagined. ?Serving takes planning, it doesn?t just happen.

?My goal for December is to actually do the Jesse Tree with my kids. ?Last year I had big plans to do this, and never did and that is actually what inspired the whole?Year of Motherhood challenge.??I?m happy to announce that we?ve already started because I have an amazing church that sends home a planner each week on what to read and even the paper to color. ?They know moms need a little help sometimes!

Bigger than me doing the Jesse Tree with my kids though is how I want to actually enjoy this month. ?I want my kids to love Jesus more after this month.??I want to love Jesus more after this month?. ?My hope and prayer for all of us in December is that we relish the time with our famiies. ?Cherish the small things and let?s show our kids that?Christmas is about Jesus and Jesus only.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa are set to show up on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time, and fans will soon find out whether drug allegations block the former stars from reaching baseball's shrine.

The 2013 ballot will be announced Wednesday.

Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza and Curt Schilling are certain to be among the other first-time eligibles. Jack Morris, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines are the top holdover candidates.

Longtime members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America will vote through next month. The much-awaited results will be announced Jan. 9, with players needing to be listed on 75 percent of the ballots to gain induction.

The upcoming election is certain to fuel the most polarizing Hall debate since career hits leader Pete Rose's betting problems put him on baseball's permanently ineligible list, barring him from the BBWAA ballot.

Bonds, Clemens and Sosa each posted some of the biggest numbers in the game's history, but all were tainted by accusations that they used performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds is baseball's all-time home runs leader with 762 and won a record seven MVP awards. Clemens ranks ninth in career wins with 354 and took home a record seven Cy Young Awards. Sosa is eighth on the home run chart with 609.

Fans, players and Hall of Fame members have all chimed in about whether stars who supposedly juiced up during the Steroids Era should make it to Cooperstown.

Many of those opposed say drug cheats should never be afforded baseball's highest individual honors. Others on the opposite side claim the use of performance-enhancing drugs was pervasive in the 1980s and 1990s, and shouldn't disqualify candidates.

If recent voting for the Hall is any indication, the odds are solidly stacked against Bonds, Clemens and Sosa.

Mark McGwire is 10th on the career home run list with 583, but has never received even 24 percent in his six tries. Big Mac has admitted using steroids and human growth hormone.

Rafael Palmeiro is among only four players with 500 homers and 3,000 hits, yet has gotten a high of 12.6 percent in his two years on the ballot. Palmeiro drew a 10-day suspension in 2005 after a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs, and said the result was due to a vitamin vial given to him by teammate Miguel Tejada.

    HTC gets new marketing chief in executive switcheroo

    HTC has announced that a new head of marketing will join the company from January, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal. Benjamin Ho is a former CMO of Motorola currently in charge of marketing at Taiwanese carrier FarEasTone. He will report directly to HTC CEO Peter Chou.

    HTC's current marketing and sales chief Jason Mackenzie will focus on sales strategy, the WSJ reports, while current CMO John Wang will be stepping down.

    HTC said that Mr. Ho’s first project at the company will be dubbed “Marketing 2.0,” with a goal of “refocusing HTC’s efforts around holistic marketing and mass-market brand outreach.”

    The past year has seen HTC lose ground to rivals Samsung and Apple, and suffer financially as a result. Samsung dominated the Android smartphone space over the summer with marketing efforts tied into the Olympic Games in London. With these top-level changes, HTC will be hoping to set the stage for an improved marketing performance, and greater public mindshare, in the new year.

    Dec. 4 is AGA Virtual Advocacy Day

    Bethesda, MD (Nov. 28, 2012) As the deadline for sequestration gets closer, the looming threat of across-the-board budget cuts becomes more real. While these cuts will have repercussions across all sectors of the U.S. economy, medical researchers and health-care professionals will be adversely affected by these major budget issues. If Congress does not take action, medical practice reimbursement will be slashed by 29 percent and research funding will be cut by 8 percent.

    On Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, members of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) from across the country will participate in the first-ever AGA Virtual Advocacy campaign. Gastroenterologists will flood Congress with calls for them to stop the cuts.

    "There is an enormous amount at stake in the next few weeks with impending cuts that will have devastating impacts on clinicians and researchers," said Loren Laine, MD, AGAF, president of the AGA Institute.

    Clinicians are facing nearly a 29 percent reduction in reimbursement from Medicare when the proposed 26.5 percent cut from the Medicare sustainable growth rate is combined with the automatic, acrossthe-board 2 percent cut from sequestration.     Dec. 4 is AGA Virtual Advocacy Day

    Bethesda, MD (Nov. 28, 2012) As the deadline for sequestration gets closer, the looming threat of across-the-board budget cuts becomes more real. While these cuts will have repercussions across all sectors of the U.S. economy, medical researchers and health-care professionals will be adversely affected by these major budget issues. If Congress does not take action, medical practice reimbursement will be slashed by 29 percent and research funding will be cut by 8 percent.

    On Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, members of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) from across the country will participate in the first-ever AGA Virtual Advocacy campaign. Gastroenterologists will flood Congress with calls for them to stop the cuts.

    "There is an enormous amount at stake in the next few weeks with impending cuts that will have devastating impacts on clinicians and researchers," said Loren Laine, MD, AGAF, president of the AGA Institute.

    Clinicians are facing nearly a 29 percent reduction in reimbursement from Medicare when the proposed 26.5 percent cut from the Medicare sustainable growth rate is combined with the automatic, acrossthe-board 2 percent cut from sequestration.
