Rights groups urge Justice probe of 1985 bombing

WASHINGTON (AP) — Civil rights groups and members of Congress are pressing the Justice Department to renew its investigation of a 1985 office bombing that killed Palestinian-American civil rights leader Alex Odeh and injured seven people.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Jewish Voice for Peace and others have launched a petition campaign asking Justice to further investigate the explosion, which demolished the committee's office in Santa Ana, Calif. The online petition has about 10,000 signatures.

California Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez sent a letter to the department in June and is seeking other lawmakers to sign a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder. The FBI identified suspects after the attack, but none were ever named or indicted.

"Whenever a leader for a civil rights organization is killed, it is the responsibility of our country as a whole— and a civil rights community as a whole— to stand up and demand that their killers be brought to justice and to insure that the U.S. Department of Justice does everything in its power to close the case," NAACP President Ben Jealous told reporters in a conference call Monday.

The DOJ, which has furloughed workers due to the government shutdown, had no immediate comment Monday, which also was the federal Columbus Day holiday. In 2010, the FBI described Odeh's killing in an agency news blog as "an active, ongoing priority investigation" and noted a $1 million reward.

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., said Monday that he wants the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations to convene a hearing on the bombing.

"We're going to pursue it vigorously and we're not going to let any more time lapse," Conyers said. "We're going to continue to help all of the organizations that are involved build up more and more support for us getting to where we ought to be in terms of a horrific, violent crime that has, I think, been put on the back burner for far too long."

At the time of the attack, the FBI said they believed the bombing was the responsibility of the militant Jewish Defense League. An attorney for the group denied the allegations and asked for a retraction from the agency. The FBI also linked Odeh's killing to two other acts of domestic terrorism in Brentwood, N.Y. and Paterson, N.J. that same year.

Odeh, the West Coast regional director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, was killed as he opened the door to his office on Oct. 11, 1985. The bombing occurred the morning after Odeh said on a Los Angeles television news broadcast that Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yassir Arafat was a "man of peace" because of his role in securing the release of passengers from the hijacked Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro in Egypt.

Odeh, who came to the U.S. from Palestine, was described by both Jews and Arabs as a nonviolent man who advocated compromise. According to the American-Arab committee, Odeh immigrated to the United States in 1972 and became a U.S. citizen in 1977. He was a poet and lecturer.

How to let other people add photos to your shared Photo Streams with iOS 7

Prior to iOS 7 you could share a Photo Stream with friends and family but they could only comment on photos and view them. It left a lot of people not wanting to use Photo Stream due to the lack of full functionality and usefulness. Luckily, iOS 7 has changed that and now allows you to let other people contribute photos too.

Here's how:

1. Launch the Photos app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
2. Under the Shared tab, tap on the Shared Photo Stream you'd like to let others add photos to or create a new shared Photo Stream if you don't currently have any.
3. Once inside that stream, tap on People along the bottom of the screen.
4. Make sure the option for Subscribers Can Post in turned to On.

That's all there is to it. Anyone you invite to that Photo Stream now has the ability to add photos to it. This is great for family members especially when on vacation or for photos of children. Just keep in mind that all users will need to be running iOS 7 or later to add photos to someone else's shared Photo Stream.

The Surprising Story of 'Thomas Jefferson's Qur'an'

Thomas Jefferson had a vast personal library reflecting his enormous curiosity about the world. Among his volumes: a Quran purchased in 1765 that informed his ideas about plurality and religious freedom in the founding of America.

In her book Thomas Jefferson's Qur'an: Islam and the Founders, author Denise Spellberg draws parallels between the beliefs of the founding father and religious tolerance in the United States today.

"I think that there is anxiety about what Muslims believe, largely because people don't understand Islam very well. I think that was also true in the 18th century," Spellberg says. "It strikes me that Jefferson was theorizing for a future that included Muslims — not in spite of their religion, but because of it and because of his notion of universal civil rights."

She sat down with All Things Considered host Arun Rath to discuss Jefferson's Qur'an and the lasting impact of the third U.S. president's views on religious freedom.

On how Jefferson came to have a Quran:

"He actually was a bibliophile from the beginning. He ordered this Quran in 1765, eleven years before he wrote the Declaration of Independence. He was a law student at the time, and he had the book shipped from England to Williamsburg, Va. ... There's an entry in the local newspaper because they were the booksellers for the time.

...

"Europeans, and Americans after them, in this period tended to be quite hostile toward Islam. And yet Jefferson was curious about the religion and law of Muslims, and that's probably why he bought the Quran."

On his views of religious freedom:

"Jefferson was unique in many ways. He criticized Islam as he did Christianity and Judaism. He talked about Islam as a religion that repressed scientific inquiry — a strange idea he got from Voltaire that wasn't right — but ... was able to separate his principles about Muslim religious liberty and civil rights from these inherited European prejudices about Islam.

"He did the same thing when arguing for the inclusion of Catholics and Jews, actually. He had not very good things to say about either Catholicism or Judaism, but he insisted that these individual practitioners should have equal civil rights. ... [Jefferson] resisted the notion, for example, that Catholics were a threat to the United States because of their allegiance to the pope as a foreign power. There were many Protestants who would have disagreed with him about Catholics, and many who would have disagreed with him about Muslims.

"They were the outsiders, whose inclusion represented the furthest reach of toleration and rights. So for Jefferson and others — and he was not alone in this, although it was a minority — for him to include Muslims meant to include everyone of every faith: Jews, Catholics and all others. And to exclude Muslims meant that there would be no universal principle of civil rights for all believers in America."

On the Muslim population in America during the 1770s:

"Jefferson and [George] Washington and others were theorizing about a future American population when, ironically and tragically, they never knew that real Muslims were already in America. But they were slaves, brought from west Africa against their will.

"We don't know how many were the first American Muslims; we think they numbered in the thousands or tens of thousands. And it's not impossible that Jefferson actually owned Muslim slaves from Africa, but there's no direct evidence of it. That's not the case for George Washington, his neighbor in Virginia.

"Washington, among his taxable items ... someone on his plantation listed the names of Fatimer and Little Fatimer. And despite being spelled with an 'er' at the end, this is clearly the name of the prophet's daughter Fatima. So there were Muslim women working on Washington's plantation at the same time he was inviting people of all faiths to a protected religious liberty and rights in the United States."

Press conference now over. If you missed it, you missed one of the most demeaning, pejorative performances I’ve ever seen by any President. I say “one of” because it’s possible there’s a more snide performance I’ve forgotten.

But today was memorable.

In a hastily called press conference, Obama is expected to reiterate that he will not negotiate with Republicans unless and until a “clean” Continuing Resolution is passed and the debt ceiling raised without condition.

That’s the message The White House sent out this morning, with Obama calling John Boehner to tell him that there will be no negotiation:

It is not surprising that Obama is seeking press coverage explaining why he will not negotiate, as Obama’s no-negotiation posture is hurting him, as even Jonathan Chait at New York Magazine recognizes:

Last night I listened to a short radio news report, and it summarized the position of the two parties as follows: Republicans want to negotiate, and Democrats refuse…. Obama’s message is currently complicated — negotiate this, not that — while Boehner’s is simple….

Obama has a problem going simple because he and Democrats have so demonized Republicans and the Tea Party as terrorists that Obama has left himself on a ledge where he either jumps and takes the country with him, or he negotiates with terrorists.

What do you really know about what goes bump in the night?
You?ve been hearing stories about bloodsucking vampires and flying witches since you learned how to walk. But what if they weren't just stories? All legends have to come from somewhere. Of course, most of these stories have twisted and distorted, so none of the legends are completely true, some have even been changed beyond recognition.
If these things really do exist, why don?t we know about them? It?s simple. When children tell their parents there is a monster under the bed, or someone in the closet, their accusations are shrugged off. Children tend to be much more open minded about this sort of thing, of course. At that age, believing in mythical beings is considered healthy, good for the imagination, normal.

Once you reach your teenage years, however, you realize that these things are all too impossible to be true. Where is the proof, the scientific facts? If you don?t see it yourself, then it is fake, just another story to be told around the campfire. That isn't to say that people don?t see these things. It is uncommon, of course, for most are good at covering their tracks, but not unusual. People always react in different ways. Some people?s minds can?t decipher it, the impossible and terrifying images they see. These people tend to shrug it off as ?seeing things?, or their brain slowly changes the memory, until they just see a human in the memory, or nothing at all.

Others have tried to tell others, warn them. Most of these people are silenced first, but those who aren't usually all end up in one place ? a mental hospital. A lot of people who have seen creatures tend to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, because of course, if someone sees something too impossible to be true, then it isn't true, and therefore the most logical situation must be correct.

These creatures are out there. Some of them are harmless, but most of them could kill you in an instant, and most of them have the perfect disguise of a human body. The only thing keeping them at bay are the few people who believe in monsters, and feel it their duty to kill it. There aren?t many left ? most of them die young, and not many choose a dangerous life for their children. So they choose to tell them the lies children across the world are hearing? that there are no monsters, no reason to be afraid of the dark, even though they know better.

The town of Intimsake is known throughout these monster hunters as one of the most magically populated towns in America. Humans live among these mythical beings, not knowing that they live in a slaughter house, and that they?re the meat. Any monster hunter that takes a stroll through will most likely be dead by morning. Only the stupid or reckless hunters visit this place, and rarely get back out alive. As soon as a supernatural creature finds out you're a monster hunter, you're screwed. Monsters don?t tend to like hunters, see ? they?re not too keen on people who kill their family for a living, except of course, hunters don't get paid. Though, a lot of monsters who have never encountered hunters don't even know people like them exist.
