Gold Christmas tree for a mere $4.2 million in Tokyo

TOKYO (Reuters) - For those seeking a glow to their Christmas this year, a jewelry store in downtown Tokyo has just the answer: a pure gold revolving "tree" covered in Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Tinker Bell and Cinderella.

The tree-like ornament is made of 40 kg (88 pounds) of pure gold, standing about 2.4 meters (7.9 ft) high and 1.2 meters in diameter. It is decorated with pure gold plate silhouette cutouts of 50 popular Disney characters and draped with ribbons made of gold leaf.

The price tag? A mere 350 million yen ($4.2 million).

But the ornament is actually a deal, said Tomoko Ishibashi, in the marketing department of Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry, which runs the Ginza Tanaka jewelry store.

"Right now gold is over 4,400 yen per gram. We used pure gold and had an expert craftsman form each Disney character by hand," she said of the decoration, which took 10 craftsmen two months to complete.

The combination of gold and Disney characters had spectators mesmerized.

"It is very vivid and the gold is very pretty," said Takashi Miura, a 36-year-old jeweler. "The characters on it are also really cute and it really looks like a Christmas tree."

For those with less ready cash, the store offers a scaled-down version that features 20 Disney characters and stands 25 cm high for a mere 2 million yen ($243,000).

While nobody has yet made a down payment on the larger tree, the miniature has already found buyers, Ishibashi said.

Beebe relying on lawmakers for exchange decision

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe said Monday he will rely on next year's legislative leaders to tell him whether there's support in the House and Senate for the state running its own insurance exchange under the federal health care law.

Beebe told reporters that he hoped to meet after Thanksgiving with incoming Senate President Michael Lamoureux and House Speaker Davy Carter on the possibility of Arkansas running its own exchange, which would allow households and small businesses to shop for private coverage.

Following months of planning for a partnership with the federal government on the exchange, Beebe said last week he was considering a state-run exchange after the Obama administration extended the deadline to make a decision. Beebe said he wants Carter and Lamoureux to measure how much support there is in next year's Legislature before the Dec. 14 deadline.

"If there's a consensus, then we'll try to accommodate what the Legislature wants to do," Beebe said. "If there's not, then we'll just stick with what they basically indicated last time."

Beebe, a Democrat, had opted for the partnership model after Republican lawmakers blocked efforts to set up a state exchange last year. Republicans won control of the House and Senate in this month's election.

Lamoureux, R-Russellville, said he believed it was possible to get a feel of whether there's enough support before the December deadline. Lamoureux said he's willing to talk with the governor but so far hasn't found support for the exchange.

"If all we're going to be doing is adding a state level of bureaucracy between us and the federal government, I don't think that would be sufficient motivation to do it," Lamoureux said.

Carter, R-Cabot, also expressed some skepticism about a state-run exchange but said he planned to reach out to the House members to see if there's any support.

"No one has convinced me that the benefits of having a state exchange outweigh not having it," said Carter, who was elected last week as the incoming speaker. "I'm open to discussing it, but right now I'm not convinced it's the best thing to do."

Last Week to Enroll in Historic Cancer Research Effort
by the American Cancer Society
Media invited to Enrollment Events Wednesday, Nov. 14

What: Salt Lake residents have only four days left to enroll in the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS 3) by the American Cancer Society. Media are invited to attend enrollment events Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 7 a.m. ? 12:30 p.m. at Questar Center and from 4 ? 7:30 p.m. at the University of Utah Medical Center. On average, American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Studies begin only once every 30 years.

Area residents have the opportunity to participate in the third installment of this historic research study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. The American Cancer Society aims to enroll more than 1,500 Salt Lake-area residents from Nov. 13-17. To register for an appointment, interested participants can visit www.cps3utah.org.

Why: CPS-3 aims to enroll men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, to help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

Who: Salt Lake-area residents who are enrolling in the American Cancer Society?s historic research project, Cancer Prevention Study-3, will be in attendance. Each participant will visit with a trained, certified phlebotomist for 20-30 minutes to give a blood sample, have their waist measured, and answer several lifestyle related questions. In addition, American Cancer Society representatives will be in attendance and available for interview.

Sony to take aim at iPhone, Galaxy S3 in upcoming 'flagship' handset

Sony's mobile division is gunning for Apple and Samsung, one of its executives claims.

In an interview with Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) published yesterday, Sony Mobile sales and marketing head Dennis Van Schie said his company is planning to announce a "flagship model that can [compete] with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S3."

Van Schie wouldn't say what his company has planned for the device, but he did confirm that it will be running Android. In the interview, he told FTD that Sony is "watching closely" the development of Microsoft's Windows Phone platform.

"If it succeeds, we will not be caught off-guard," Van Schie said of Windows Phone.

Sony has been rumored to be working on a flagship phone for months now. Last month, a report surfaced saying that a device, known as the C650X and codenamed Odin, was in the works. It's not clear if Odin is the flagship device Sony might be working on, but according to a User-Agent Profile discovered by Blog of Mobile, that device is running Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean). Any flagship phone would likely run a later version of Android.

Taking aim at Apple and Samsung is not easy. Last month, research firm Canaccord Genuity reported that Apple and Samsung combine to generate 106 percent of the mobile industry's earnings. How is that possible, you wonder? The companies' biggest competitors, including Research In Motion, Nokia, and Motorola, all posted operating losses during the third quarter, leaving extra cash for the taking.

Van Schie told FTD that his company plans to show off the flagship smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. It will also make an appearance at the Mobile World Congress early next year.

Pakistan held, freed militant before girl's attack

KHAR, Pakistan (AP) ? One of the two Taliban militants suspected of attacking a teenage girl activist was detained by the Pakistani military in 2009 but subsequently released, intelligence officials said Thursday.

Malala Yousufzai, 14, was shot and critically wounded on Oct. 9 as she headed home from school in the northwest Swat Valley. The Taliban said they targeted Malala, a fierce advocate for girls' education, because she promoted "Western thinking" and was critical of the militant group.

The military detained Attaullah during the army's 2009 offensive in Swat because of suspected ties with the Pakistani Taliban, which had established effective control over the valley at the time, said two intelligence officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The military successfully pushed most of the militants out of Swat, but Attaullah was released because of a lack of evidence linking him to specific attacks, said the officials. It's unclear how long he was held.

The shooting of Malala outraged people around the world and stepped up pressure on the Pakistani government to intensify its fight against the Taliban and their allies.

Malala was airlifted to England earlier this week for specialized treatment and to protect her from follow-on attacks by the Taliban, who have threatened to target her again until she is killed.

A Pakistani official said Wednesday that Malala was improving and has been moving her limbs. The official, who said he was briefed by Malala's doctors in England, spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't cleared to talk on the record about the case.
