Panel: Test every child for cholesterol by age 11 (AP)

CHICAGO ? Every child should be tested for high cholesterol between ages 9 and 11 so steps can be taken to prevent heart disease later on, a panel of doctors urged Friday in new advice that is sure to be controversial.

Until now, major medical groups have suggested cholesterol tests only for children with a family history of early heart disease or high cholesterol and those who are obese or have diabetes or high blood pressure. But studies show that is missing many children with high cholesterol, and the number of them at risk is growing because of the obesity epidemic.

The recommendations are in new guidelines from an expert panel appointed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

They also advise diabetes screening every two years starting as early as 9 for children who are overweight and have other risks for Type 2 diabetes, including family history.

Autopsy studies show children already have signs of heart disease even before they have symptoms. By the fourth grade, 10 percent to 13 percent of U.S. children have high cholesterol, defined as a score of 200 or more.

Fats build up in the heart arteries in the first and second decade of life but usually don't start hardening the arteries until people are in their 20s and 30s, said one of the guideline panel members, Dr. Elaine Urbina, director of preventive cardiology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

"If we screen at age 20, it may be already too late," she said. "To me it's not controversial at all. We should have been doing this for years."

Doctors recommend testing between ages 9 and 11 because cholesterol dips during puberty and rises later.

The guidelines say that cholesterol drugs likely would be recommended for fewer than 1 percent of kids tested. Most children found to have high cholesterol would be advised to control it with diet and physical activity.

And children younger than 10 should not be treated with cholesterol drugs unless they have severe cholesterol problems, the guidelines say.

The guidelines also say doctors should:

_Take yearly blood pressure measurements for children starting at age 3.

_Start routine anti-smoking advice when kids are ages 5 to 9, and advise parents of infants against smoking in the home.

_Review infants' family history of obesity and start tracking body mass index, or BMI, a measure of obesity, at age 2.

The panel also suggests using more frank terms for kids who are overweight and obese than some government agencies have used in the past. Children whose BMI is in the 85th to 95th percentile should be called overweight, not "at risk for overweight," and kids whose BMI is in the 95th percentile or higher should be called obese, not "overweight ? even kids as young as age 2, the panel said.

"Some might feel that `obese' is an unacceptable term for children and parents," so doctors should "use descriptive terminology that is appropriate for each child and family," the guidelines recommend.

The guidance was released online Friday by the journal Pediatrics and will be presented Sunday at an American Heart Association conference in Florida.

VALENCIA, Venezuela (AP) ? His eyes tearing up with emotion, Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos embraced investigators who planned his rescue and said he had wondered whether he would survive a two-day kidnapping ordeal that ended when commandos swept into his captors' mountain hideout.

Ramos said Saturday that he was happy and thankful to be alive a day after his rescue, and that the final moments had been hair-raising as police and the kidnappers exchanged heavy fire in the remote area where he was being held. He said his kidnappers had carefully planned the abduction and told him they were going to demand a large ransom.

"I didn't know if I was going to get out of it alive," Ramos told reporters at a police station in his hometown of Valencia, flanked by police investigators and National Guard commanders. "It was very hard for me. It was very hard for my family."

Ramos, 24, had not been seen or heard from since he was seized at gunpoint outside his home Wednesday night and whisked away in an SUV. It was the first known kidnapping of a Major League Baseball player in Venezuela, and the abduction set off an outpouring of candlelight vigils and public prayers at stadiums as well as outside Ramos' house.

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said Saturday that authorities had arrested four of the captors, all of them Venezuelan men in their 20s. A 60-year-old woman and a 74-year-old man were also arrested as accomplices for supplying the kidnappers with food from their home in the area, he said.

Authorities are still searching for four Colombian men who escaped during the rescue, El Aissami said. He didn't say whether anyone had been wounded in the gunfire.

El Aissami said investigators had studied past kidnappings in the area for clues about Ramos' whereabouts.

The remote mountainous area had been used in a previous kidnapping, El Aissami said, so investigators looked there and found a red SUV parked at a home near where Ramos was being held. The SUV had mud on it even though there was no mud in the area, he said.

It wasn't clear how investigators connected that first house with the house where Ramos was being held.

President Hugo Chavez personally authorized the rescue operation once investigators thought they had found the spot, El Aissami said, and had followed the operation "minute by minute."

Ramos had recently returned to his homeland after his rookie year with the Nationals to play during the offseason in the Venezuelan league.

He had been just outside his house's front door with relatives on Wednesday when he was abducted in his working-class neighborhood in Valencia, about 90 miles (150 kilometers) west of Caracas.

Ramos said that when he was seized, his captors drove him for five or six hours, and once changed from one SUV to another. He said they bound his hands at first, but later allowed him not to be tied up. The kidnappers didn't cover their faces and they spoke little to him, he said.

"They demanded only money," he said.

Ramos said some of his abductors spoke with Colombian accents and had been studying his movements before carrying out the abduction.

"They told me many things they knew of my private life," he said. "They knew a lot about me. They had very good information, an informant who told them all that."

Asked more about that informant, he said he didn't have further details but that "they themselves told me."

Ramos said he was kept in a room and passed the time lying on a bed. When the gunfire erupted on Friday as the rescuers arrived, "I was on the bed and I threw myself directly to the floor."

"It was like 15 minutes of shots until the officials arrived and saw me in the room," said Ramos, who hugged the justice minister as well as police and National Guard officers.

Ramos said he was enjoying spending time with his family again, and planned to start training on Monday again in order to play with his Venezuelan team, the Aragua Tigres, on Wednesday.

He said he didn't plan to travel back to Washington for now. "I want to stay here to give them that, to the Venezuelan people ... so that they can see me play here."

After his rescue was announced Friday night, Ramos' mother Maria Campos de Ramos celebrated, exclaiming on television: "Thanks to God!"

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo also spoke with Ramos.

"He asked me to thank all who played a role in his rescue, and all those who kept him and his family in their thoughts and prayers," Rizzo said in a statement. "I join Wilson in thanking the many law enforcement officials in Venezuela and investigators with Major League Baseball who worked tirelessly to ensure a positive ending to what has been a frightening ordeal."

Security has increasingly become a concern for Venezuelan players and their families as a wave of kidnappings has hit the wealthy as well as the middle class.

The country has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America, and the vast majority of crimes go unsolved. The number of kidnappings has soared in recent years.

Major League Baseball officials said it was the first kidnapping of a major leaguer that they could recall. But relatives of several players have previously been kidnapped for ransom in Venezuela, and in two cases have been killed.

Some kidnappings in Venezuela have previously been carried out by highly organized criminal groups that demand ransom.

Bodyguards typically shadow major leaguers when they return to their homeland to play in Venezuela's baseball league.

"They didn't physically harm me, but psychologically I underwent very great harm," Ramos said. "I was always praying to God, and thanks to God he gave me the miracle of sending me these wonderful people."

He saluted his rescuers saying "I'm alive thanks to them."

High-Fiber Diet May Help Thwart Colon Cancer (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Nov. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Eating a high-fiber diet may reduce your risk of colorectal cancer, especially if the fiber is from cereal and whole grains, according to a new review.

British and Dutch researchers analyzed 25 studies that included a total of nearly 2 million people. Compared with the lowest levels of fiber consumption, each 10 gram per day increase in intake of total dietary fiber and cereal fiber was associated with a 10 percent reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

Consuming 90 grams more a day (three servings, or three and one-quarter ounces) of whole grains was associated with about a 20 percent lower risk.

The review did not find significant evidence of a link between fruit or vegetable fiber and colorectal cancer risk.

A previous analysis did find that a high intake of fruit and vegetables was associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, which suggests that components other than fiber in fruits and vegetables may play a role, the researchers said.

The study appears online Nov. 11 in BMJ.

"In summary, our meta-analysis suggests that a high intake of dietary fiber, particularly from cereal and whole grains, is associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer," the researchers wrote in a journal news release.

They also noted that a high-fiber diet may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, overweight, obesity and possibly overall risk of death.

One expert said there may be a physiological basis for the anti-cancer benefit of a high-fiber diet.

"This study highlights the importance of a diet rich in fiber," said Dr. Anthony Starpoli, a gastroenterologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "We know that soluble is most helpful in improving colon transit times. As the contents of the colon move at a better rate, there is thought to be less toxic exposure to the interior of the colon thereby reducing risk of developing colon cancer," he explained.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, with 1.2 million new cases diagnosed each year, the news release noted.

The findings provide more evidence of the many health benefits of whole grains, but further research is needed to learn how this occurs, Anne Tjonneland, from the Danish Cancer Society, added in an accompanying editorial.

CORONADO, California (AP) ? President Barack Obama is jetting away from Washington's political and budget battles, focusing instead on Asia-Pacific nations and trying to persuade voters at home that the distant region is essential to American jobs and security.

Obama departed Friday for summits in Hawaii and Indonesia, with a visit to Australia in between.

For nine days, the president will be as many as 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers) from home at a time when jobs, the frail economy and other domestic concerns matter most to the U.S. electorate. But Asia and the Pacific region are crucial to America's future, the White House insists.

Obama was born in Hawaii, spent boyhood years in Indonesia and points to himself as America's first Pacific president, so his worldview is shaped deeply by Asia. His administration is showering attention on the region as a driver of global politics, a prized buyer of American products and a central player in protecting world peace.

"If you want America to be a world leader in this century, that leadership is going to have to include the Asia-Pacific," said Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser.

Such a focus is essential to American interests, analysts say, but still a test for a president who is seeking to govern and run for re-election at once.

The White House hopes the world will see Obama's trip as a pivot point in American policy, as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton put it. The war in Iraq will be over by year's end, the war in Afghanistan is winding down and Obama is trying to expand trade, security alliances and cultural ties with traditional allies and emerging powers across Asia.

The subtext of the trip agenda is Obama's intention to keep the United States as a viable counterweight to a rising China, particularly in the eyes of other leaders in the region.

The element Obama aides don't mention is the potential political cost of having the president out of the country, half a world away, as other debates rage back home.

The economy is king, from the presidential campaign to Obama's jobs fights to a legislative supercommittee charged with finding more than $1 trillion in cuts by a Nov. 23 deadline. Republicans and Democrats seem far apart, and there is growing pessimism they will succeed.

"I can see the domestic political advisers saying, 'Ten days in the Pacific while people are out of work in the U.S. ? Mr. President, you ought to cut this one short,'" said Douglas Paal, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former national security aide to presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

White House officials say there are no plans to do that. A suddenly shortened trip would be seen as a slap to Asian allies, and the Australian leg has already been postponed twice because of higher-ranking domestic concerns for Obama.

En route to Hawaii, Obama stopped in Coronado, California, to attend a Veterans Day basketball game between Michigan State and No. 1 North Carolina on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson. That's the aircraft carrier that took Osama bin Laden's body to a burial at sea after American commandos killed the al-Qaida leader in Pakistan.

Over the weekend, the president will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, forum in Honolulu, to promote trade and jobs.

The big push for Obama will be establishing a Pacific-wide free trade zone that is now being negotiated by the United States and eight smaller economies.

The goal is for the trade zone to eventually cover a region accounting for more than half of global output. Japan's prime minister, Yoshihiko Noda, said Friday that his country would participate in talks about joining the free trade zone, and there are hopes that China and others will, too. The expectations at the Obama-hosted summit are not for a deal but perhaps the announcement of a broad framework and more discussions.

As usual, the more intense diplomatic action will happen on the sidelines. Obama will hold private meetings with the leaders of Japan, Russia and China.

Altogether, Obama will spend four nights in Hawaii and is expected to have a light schedule on Monday ? only a fundraiser, a reminder of the domestic politics that follow him.

In Australia, Obama will deliver a speech to Parliament in Canberra.

He is also expected to announce a deeper U.S. military footprint in the country during a stop in Darwin, in the northern reaches of Australia. The defense agreement is likely to include positioning of U.S. equipment in Australia, increasing access to bases and conducting more joint exercises and training.

More broadly, Obama will use the trip to try to reassure allies that the United States will not slash its security presence across the Asia-Pacific despite austerity measures at home.

Yet the threat of defense cuts is rattling Obama's own administration. If the deficit-cutting supercommittee cannot agree on a plan that wins approval from Congress, a new law calls for deep cuts across the government to kick in automatically starting in 2013, including more than $500 billion for the military.

The president caps his trip in Indonesia, where he spent four years as a boy.

Obama delivered a speech in the capital, Jakarta, last year in which he declared that "Indonesia is a part of me." This time he will be the first U.S. president to take part in the East Asia Summit, in Bali, known as a tropical paradise for tourism. The U.S. has put its stamp on the summit agenda in the area of security, including halting the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The trip amounts to Obama's most extensive travel of the year.

He leaves as his approval ratings have been mired in the mid- to low-40 percent range in many recent polls, including a 46 percent approval number in the latest Associated Press-GfK poll from mid-October. His overall rating outpaces his performance on the economy. On matters of foreign affairs, Obama fares far better, garnering the approval of about 6 in 10 adults.

Obama is expected to underscore the relevance of the trip to Americans by the day. He will be back in Washington on Nov. 20.

"This isn't a trip to the far-flung corners of Asia," said Daniel Russel, Obama's senior director for Asian affairs. "This is a trip to the Asia-Pacific. The U.S. is very much an Asia-Pacific nation. We're a resident power."

Hope Solo: 'I almost quit' 'Dancing'

Maksim Chmerkovskiy's temper gets the best of him sometimes.

During last week's "Dancing with the Stars" rehearsals, the 31-year-old pro placed a firm hand on partner Hope Solo's shoulder in an effort to make a point. The soccer star, 30, told Ryan Seacrest's "KIIS FM" show Monday that she "almost quit" after the incident.

"I want everybody to know out there that as a strong, independent woman that stands up for herself, I would never just let that go unnoticed," she said. "Outside of the cameras, [Maks] knows that he was in the wrong. He will be the first one to stand up to that."

Solo clarified that she "didn't just sit back and let that happen," and added that a similar incident "will never happen again."

"I almost quit the show right then and there," she said. "I almost walked out, but I told myself I am in this for the long-haul, through all the bumps and bruises."

But Solo pointed out, "You can tell I didn't really flinch."

Fortunately, Solo got out her anger by talking things out with Chmerkovskiy.

Last month, the Ukrainian pro lashed out at judge Len Goodman after he called their rumba their "worst dance of the season."

"I've been in this business for 50 years," Goodman argued.

"Then maybe it's time to go!" Chmerkovskiy barked back, even referring to "DWTS" as "my show."

He explained his outburst to the Hollywood Reporter : "I feel like it's my show, and together, with other pros, I dedicated six years of my life to this show...I've helped make it what it is, but I've never taken it away from anybody else who participated."
