The RBI raised interest rates by 25 basis points on Sept 16, the twelfth increase since March 2010, and the tone of the central bank's review was perceived as hawkish with economists expecting another rate rise before the year end, despite plenty of signs that the economy is slowing.

"Most of the time India's growth hasn't fallen below 6 and 6.7 percent, but there is a huge upside to inflation," Khan told Reuters on the sidelines of a financial conference in Istanbul. "In the short term there could be a trade off. But in the medium and long term, low and sustainable inflation is necessary for sustaining the growth."

"So if there is a bit of sacrifice on the growth side we don't mind but inflation and inflation expectations have to be controlled," Khan said.

Khan said an upside to the current global problems lay in the possibility that commodity prices could ease, which could give the RBI cause to reassess its stance.

"Hopefully commodity prices do soften," he said adding, "That would give us some input to think of our stance."

Gross domestic product growth in Asia's third-largest economy slipped to 7.7 percent in the three months through June.

RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao defended the 18-month monetary tightening campaign on Monday, calling the country's inflation rate of about 9 percent "inimical to growth."

Obama's Los Angeles campaign office smashed up (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Police said Friday they are investigating what appears to be a politically motivated attack on a campaign office for President Barack Obama in Los Angeles, only days before he's scheduled to arrive in Southern California.

Several campaign staffers were in a room at the back of the office Thursday night when they heard the sound of smashing glass at the front and side of the building, said police Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

They found three front-door windows and a side glass door had been smashed.

No rocks or projectiles were found, and police believe one or more attackers used a tire iron or something similar to break the glass, Smith said.

"Someone could have run by and hit it with an object," he said.

Detectives believed the attack was politically motivated because no other businesses in the usually low-crime area were targeted, Smith said. No threats were made before or after the attack.

Police notified the Secret Service and FBI officials said they are assisting Los Angeles police with the investigation to determine if the incident was motivated by hate or an act of domestic terrorism.

Katie Hogan, a spokeswoman for Obama's re-election campaign, declined comment.

The office housed in a three-story building is in the Playa Vista area on the suburban west side. Plywood boards covered the broken windows and door. The office was closed Friday.

Obama is scheduled to visit Los Angeles on Monday to raise money for his campaign.

Few smartphone owners take security seriously

Nearly 40 percent of smartphone users say they're worries about security, including harmful apps, malicious emails and having their locations tracked and activities monitored. But 82 percent of them are not using security apps for their cellphones.

The figures are from The NPD Group's report, "Emerging Technology Trends: Mobile Security," released Wednesday, which found that while iPhone and Android smartphone users "share similar security concerns, 30 percent of Android smartphone owners have installed security products, compared to just 6 percent of iPhone owners."

One reason for the difference: Google's Android operating system is, by design, more open in terms of app development compared to Apple's iPhone. Although certainly, the iPhone is not invulnerable to security woes.

As msnbc.com's Wilson Rothman wrote earlier this year:

For Android, the danger is downloading apps outside of Google's App Market (or other reputable app stores such as Amazon's). If you're off somewhere getting apps from sources you don't know or trust, there could be consequences. For iPhone users, the line really is whether you jailbreak or not. NPD's findings are based on online surveys done in July with a "representative sample of 1,085 panelists from NPD's online panel. Results were balanced to represent the U.S. adult population."

About 25 percent of smartphone owners who don't have security apps or software for their phones felt such products were "too expensive; yet among those owners with security products installed, 75 percent paid nothing, and the mean price paid was less than $3," Baker said.

French Bank Retreat Raises Aircraft Finance Fears

The global aviation industry faces growing uncertainty over financing due to Europe's debt crisis and worries surrounding French banks, lenders and airlines were warned.

Despite record numbers of aircraft leaving the production lines at Airbus and Boeing to fuel ever-growing demand from rising economies, doubts are spreading as to how the growth will be financed.

French banks play a key role in the global aircraft financing market and represented about 31 percent of transactions in 2010 followed by Germany, Ryanair finance director Howard Millar said.

"The French banks have scaled back significantly. There will be less finance available and any finance will be more expensive," he told an industry conference.

Societe Generale and BNP announced plans to scale back lending in the aircraft market last week as French banks moved to sell assets and reduce lending.

"In the past few months things have got worse. French banks are effectively closed for new clients," Millar said. "We are in an ivory tower -- we are heading for a little bit of a car crash in terms of financing."

French banks are fighting to restore confidence after suffering a sharp summer sell-off, driven by fears they are too dependent on wholesale market funding and would be ill equipped to cope with the fallout from a Greek debt default.

Some banks are finding it hard to obtain dollar funding for periods of longer than a few days as US money market funds and other traditional dollar lenders become increasingly nervous about the threat of a Greek debt default, which could destabilise markets throughout the region.

European bank stocks have lost a third of their value since July.

Aircraft are sold in dollars and their second-hand value is tied to the US currency, so participants rely on dollars to grease the wheels of one of the world's most capital-intensive export industries.

Banks are also grappling with wider problems which have a knock-on effect on the availability of financing for aircraft, Ron Wainshal, chief executive of US lessor Aircastle, said.

"I think it will get worse before it gets better. There is a short-term challenge, particularly in Europe," he said.

Banks are also squeezed by tougher capital adequacy regulations under the Basel III accord.

Boeing, Airbus and smaller manufacturers deliver a total of up to USD$80 billion of new aircraft a year.

Production is rising to meet demand from emerging markets and most recently a wave of orders to renew older and inefficient fleets in the United States.

Airlines order aircraft years ahead and pay upfront deposits but nearly all the value is paid on delivery. A great deal of that is financed shortly before the handover.

French bankers have been squeezed by a shortage of dollar deposits from US investors due to fears concerning their exposure to Greece but they sought to allay concerns about liquidity.

"We'll be here. We'll do our share the best we can," said Christian McCormick, chief executive, Natixis Transport Finance, adding German banks were not hampered by the same dollar funding concerns.

Of the USD$73 billion of aircraft to be delivered next year, about USD$41 billion needs to be financed by banks in dollars, he said.

In the 2008 credit crunch, US and European credit agencies stepped into the breach as funding dried up by providing guarantees to assist aircraft exports at lean financing rates.

But the export/import agencies have significantly increased their fees and their room for manoeuvre may be constrained as the debt crisis spreads to sovereign assets and ratings, bankers said.

The shortage of bank financing has created uncertainty over 2012 deliveries but so far there is no serious evidence of a funding gap, several lessors and bankers said.

"It is more difficult from a pricing and availability standpoint. Banks are willing to do business but are reluctant to lock in for the long term," said Madhu Vijay, senior vice president of US lessor Aviation Capital Group, part of mutual insurer Pacific Life.

There are fewer doubts over the financing for new aircraft deliveries than over the market for second-hand aircraft, he said. Second-hand values are important to the industry because they influence the appetite of lessors to buy aircraft. Lessors control about a quarter of the world fleet.

The market uncertainty comes at a time when US insurer AIG is preparing to float its ILFC leasing unit and Royal Bank of Scotland seeks buyers for its RBS Aviation business, but is not expected to scupper the sales, sector bankers said.

Yes mountain biking can be taken seriously, but even when racing at the top end- the riders all have fun. Be it sliding around in the mud; speeding flat out down a descent; brushing your arms on the bushes on narrow single track or sailing through the air.

Mountain biking is genuinely fun- trying to tackle off road terrain and take control of something often unpredictable is hugely enjoyable at all levels.

Can the same be said for riders in the Tour? Can the same be said for those hammering round velodromes? I?m sure some enjoy the buzz of riding at high end, but is it actually fun?

Muddy out? Brilliant- have some fun sliding round in the slop.

Raining? Brilliant- get out and carve through the biggest puddles you can find and have a blast soaking your friends.

Cold? Not for long on a mountain bike. Too hot?? As long as you?re hydrated and you keep moving, you can ride an MTB in any heat.

Are you seeing a pattern here? It?s probably the best sport for the great British climate where we often get all off the above in one day?

Healthy

"The idea is to get a promise to raise taxes in exchange for spending 'cuts' achieved by ending two wars when they?re planned to end and some Medicare savings that will begin toward the end of the next presidential term and phase in over the next two terms after that? Sweet."
