26 die as last day of Iraq pilgrimage hit by bombs

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Two car bombs in Iraq's capital killed at least 26 people Saturday on the last day of a Shiite pilgrimage already hit by multiple bombings. The blasts, one in a heavily guarded area close to a revered shrine, raised the week's death toll to more than 100 and cast further doubt on the divided government's ability to secure the country after the American withdrawal.

Black plumes of smoke filled the sky over Baghdad's northern Kazimiyah neighborhood, where the shrine to eighth-century saint Imam Moussa al-Kadhim draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year. One of the bombs tore into throngs of people who packed the streets nearby, carrying aloft symbolic coffins and beating their chests in mourning to mark his martyrdom.

Three days before, nearly two dozen coordinated bombs around the country killed 72 people. Al-Qaida's Iraqi affiliate on Saturday claimed responsibility for that attack, which marked one of the deadliest days in Iraq since the last U.S. troops left in December.

The fierce wave of bombings targeting Shiites suggests that the al-Qaida-allied Sunni militants are stepping up their periodic attacks ? which recently have come every few weeks ? to try to exploit sectarian cracks in the elected government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and possibly spark another round of the bloodshed between Sunni and Shiite Muslims that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war only a few years ago. Shiite religious commemorations are frequent targets of these attacks, although overall levels of violence are still down considerably from then.

The sheer number of blasts during the al-Kadhim pilgrimage shows the ability of al-Qaida to retain and perhaps rebuild its bombings networks despite heavy blows struck to the organization by U.S. forces and allied Sunni militias prior to the American withdrawal. The bombers' ability to penetrate so close to the shrine indicates the challenges faced by Iraq's security forces in securing huge religious gatherings.

"Those behind the attacks, they've become more determined now and see more of an opportunity because of the dysfunctional political process," said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center and an analyst on regional politics.

The government is now split on mostly sectarian lines and over what critics say are al-Maliki's increasingly authoritarian tendencies. Sunni and Kurdish politicians say he is trying to increase his power at their communities' expense. While the wholesale violence between Sunni and Shiite neighborhoods and villages that killed tens of thousands in 2006 and 2007 has all but disappeared, the political tension has fostered a growing sense of pessimism.

"It's a fairly bleak picture right now," Shaikh said. He added, "This is quite depressing, considering we are approaching a decade since the initial invasion into Iraq."

The U.S. hailed the invasion it led in 2003 to topple Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein over his suspected weapons of mass destruction program as an opportunity to set up a model democracy in the Middle East. The U.S. troops left an elected government behind when they withdrew, but it still cannot provide basic services like reliable electricity.

Saturday's bombings highlighted the relative weakness of Iraq's security forces, unable to stop the attacks despite throwing up roadblocks, banning motorcycles and putting tens and thousands of police and soldiers around the city. After the explosions came grumblings that those measures were insufficient.

"There is no real security, no real searches," said Mohamed Ali, who witnessed the first bombing in Shula, where authorities a few hours later were towing away the burned remains of a car. "Today is an exceptional day all security forces must be on high alert."

The first car bomb went off just after noon, hidden in a taxi parked among a group of other cabs along the procession route. It killed 14 people including two policemen and wounding 46 others, a police official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

An hour later, a second parked car exploded in the Kazimiyah neighborhood itself, about five kilometers (three miles) from the al-Kadhim mosque. At least 12 people were killed and 26 were wounded, the police official said.

It was unclear how the car had penetrated the tight ring of security thrown up around Kazimiyah after Wednesday's multiple bombings. Police and soldiers had been searching vehicles and people at checkpoints leading into the neighborhood for days.

Despite the latest violence, Saturday's commemorations for al-Kadhim continued. The crowds swayed and sang along with music played over the mosque's loudspeakers and bands of men formed circles to dance and wail, throwing their hands in the air as they cried out for the imam. On the sidelines, people used hoses to spray water on the crowds to relieve summer heat that reached 47 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit).

"The terrorists will not discourage us," vowed a song played over the mosque loudspeakers, promising to keep the centuries-old pilgrimage alive "even if they cut off our bodies into pieces.

The mosque opened its doors to the pilgrims on Saturday's final day of the commemoration, allowing them to enter and pray at al-Kadhim's shrine before filing out of another exit.

In 2005, the al-Kadhim procession was struck by another tragedy when thousands of Shiite pilgrims panicked by rumors of a suicide bomber broke into a stampede on a bridge, leaving some 1,000 of them dead. Police later said no explosives were found on the bridge, and poor crowd control and the climate of fear in Iraq appeared largely to blame.

PARIS (AP) ? French voters are choosing a new parliament Sunday that will determine how far Socialist President Francois Hollande can go with his push for economic stimulus in France and around a debt-burdened, stagnant Europe.

The left is in the spotlight and expected to take the driver's seat of the 577-seat National Assembly after Sunday's second round of legislative elections.

Hollande's Socialists dominated the first round last week and pollsters predict they will win the most seats in the lower house. That would wrench it from the hands of former President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservatives, who have led it for a decade.

The French election campaign focused on local issues but it will determine this country's political direction, which has Europe-wide importance. France is the second-biggest economy in the eurozone and, along with powerhouse Germany, contributes heavily to bailouts to weaker nations and often drives EU-wide policy.

Sunday's decisive second round election comes after a hasty new bailout for Spanish banks, and the same day as crucial voting in Greece. The Greek elections may determine whether the country stays in the euro, with repercussions for all the other 16 countries that use the joint currency.

After budget-tightening in France under Sarkozy that leftists warned would send France back into recession, Hollande is pushing for government-sponsored stimulus to encourage growth ? and has met opposition from German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the two try to stem Europe's crisis.

Hollande's Socialist government has pledged to reduce the deficit, but markets are worried about higher spending when France's debts are so high.

Voting started at 8 a.m. (0600GMT) in mainland France and the final polls close in big cities at 8 p.m. (1800GMT). Polling agency projections of the results are expected soon afterward, and official results are expected late Sunday night.

Political and personal intrigue ? and the resurgent far right ? marked the legislative campaign. The anti-immigrant National Front, which wants to abandon the euro and stop immigration, is wrangling for its first real presence in parliament in more than a quarter century.

Sarkozy's conservative UMP party is struggling to hold onto seats, and many candidates are angling for far-right votes to defy polls and win, or assure a respectable presence in parliament.

National Front leader Marine Le Pen has revamped the party to try to shed its reputation as racist and anti-Semitic inherited under party founder Jean-Marie Le Pen. Daughter Marine placed a solid third in spring presidential elections and its candidates ranked third in last Sunday's first round of parliamentary voting.

But the French parliament system is such that the party is not expected to get more than three or four seats.

Any candidate who won support of more than 12.5 percent of registered voters in the first round advanced to Sunday's runoff, and many districts have three-way races.

Military man has Egypt presidency in sights

CAIRO (Reuters) - Ahmed Shafik's campaign to succeed Hosni Mubarak as president of Egypt did not include a stopover in Tahrir Square.

Birthplace of the uprising that toppled the autocratic leader and now the rallying point for an unfinished revolution, Tahrir has seethed with hostility to a man seen by many as a Mubarak offshoot who would reverse progress to democracy.

Shafik's critics say influence wielded by Egypt's interim army rulers got him as far as this weekend's run-off against the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsy.

Suspicion that powerful forces are lining up behind the former air force commander deepened on Thursday when Egypt's highest court overturned a law that would have barred him from the presidency and declared a parliamentary vote won by Islamists as void.

But there is real appeal to his law-and-order message for millions of Egyptians fed up with social and political turmoil since the collapse of Mubarak's heavy-handed security apparatus in last year's popular uprising.

There is also the fear, not least among Egypt's 10 percent Christian minority, of rising Islamist power that Shafik has portrayed as a dangerous threat.

In his last appeals for votes before Friday's close of official campaigning, Shafik pledged to "address chaos and return stability", but also claimed the mantle of the uprising for himself, promising to bring its dividends to all Egyptians.

Yet Shafik, 70, remains a divisive figure whose repeated expressions of support for the uprising are met with indignation by the youthful revolutionaries who led it.

Many recall his offer as prime minister of "sweets and chocolates" for the protesters in Tahrir, proffered while they were mourning comrades shot dead by riot police.

After the first round of the presidential election last month, he tried to reach out again to his staunchest critics, saying: "Your revolution was stolen... I pledge to return its fruits to your hands."

A state electoral committee said Shafik came second in last month's opening round of Egypt's first free presidential election. Turnout was 46 percent.

It said Morsy won 24.3 percent of the vote and Shafik 23.3 percent, knocking more moderate candidates out of the race.

Many Shafik supporters come not from the political hotbed of Cairo and other cities, but from the countryside, where voter concerns about security and order tend to be strongest.

Successive attacks on his campaign offices drew defiance from Shafik that played up to his no-nonsense image.

"Do they think that by burning Shafik's headquarters, they will burn Shafik? Forget it," he told reporters early this month before evoking another campaign refrain - fear of the unknown.

"The Brotherhood represents the darkness and secrets and nobody knows who they are and what they do... I represent Egypt, all of Egypt," he said.

EXPERIENCE

Shafik, who favors open-necked shirts, stood alongside relatives of Mubarak's two predecessors, including the wife of Anwar Sadat and daughter of Gamal Abdel Nasser, at an event on Wednesday, hinting at a continuity of power that a Morsy win would rupture.

He has vowed to uphold Sadat's 1979 peace treaty with Israel, saying: "I object to Israel's current actions, but I am a man who honors past agreements."

He says he has the military and political experience to lead Egypt into a new democratic era, yet his links to Mubarak have polarized voters. He sees himself as slotting into Egypt's 60-year-old tradition of drawing presidents from the military.

"You cannot suddenly bring a civilian man with no relation or knowledge of military life and make him president and supreme commander of the armed forces," Shafik told Reuters earlier this year, saying he could ensure a "smooth transition".

The military council that took over from Mubarak has promised to hand over to a new president by July, but the army is expected to wield political influence for years to come.

"Civilians may be in a hurry and they think that as soon as the new president is elected he will act freely of the military. No, this will not be the case," Shafik declared.

But the idea of Shafik taking power angers many Egyptians who see him as a tool of the army and the Mubarak old guard who would roll back all the uprising's fragile gains.

Protesters threw stones and shoes at him when he voted in Cairo last month. "The coward is here. The criminal is here!" they chanted. "Down with military rule!" Shafik was unhurt.

NO APOLOGIES

He makes no secret of his "good relations" with army chief Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, saying he consulted him before deciding whether to run.

Shafik has openly expressed his admiration for Mubarak, making no apologies for describing the former president as his role model, after his own father, in a 2010 newspaper interview.

"See what I said? And I will keep telling you this until the last day in my life, and for a reason: he had great courage," Shafik told al-Hayat television when queried about the remark.

Mubarak named Shafik prime minister in a last-ditch attempt to placate protesters. A few days later the president stepped down. Shafik lasted another three weeks before he too resigned.

In a military career spanning four decades, Shafik served in wars with Israel and is credited with shooting down an Israeli aircraft in the 1973 war.

When he led the air force in the 1990s, he sought to modernize it with more advanced weapons. Some Egyptian officials say Washington, which gives Egypt $1.3 billion a year in military aid, opposed some plans because of Israeli objections.

As civil aviation minister from 2002 to 2011, he overhauled state airline EgyptAir and improved the country's airports.

UK's Prince Philip discharged from hospital

LONDON?? Prince Philip, the husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth, left hospital on the eve of his 91st birthday on Saturday, five days after he was taken ill during celebrations to mark the monarch's 60 years on the throne.

Looking relaxed and in good spirits, the Duke of Edinburgh smiled and shook hands with staff outside the central London hospital where he has been treated for a bladder infection since Monday.

His illness overshadowed the later stages of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and meant the queen had to attend several events on her own, including a concert outside Buckingham Palace on Monday evening.

"His Royal Highness left hospital today. He continues to improve and he will now continue his convalescence at home," a palace spokesman said.

Wearing a tweed jacket, white shirt and red tie, Philip waved at well-wishers and the media outside the King Edward VII Hospital before being driven away in a black Land Rover.

He nodded when asked if he was feeling better and looking forward to his birthday. He will celebrate with his family on Sunday, the palace said.

Philip was taken to hospital after spending hours on a ceremonial barge in driving rain and a cold wind as part of a flotilla of 1,000 vessels on the River Thames to mark the queen's landmark.

Royal aides said Philip was treated with antibiotics and made good progress during the week.

His grandsons Princes William and Harry, sons of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, visited him in hospital on Friday.

The Greek-born former sailor is known for his gaffes and off-the-cuff comments about groups such as the Chinese, deaf people and Australia's Aborigines.

But the longest serving consort in British history has also won admirers for his charity work and loyal support to the queen. She has described him as her "strength and stay" and once said she owes him "a debt greater than he would ever claim".

Dropbox confirms Galaxy S III on AT&T and Verizon won't include 50GB storage

If that extra Dropbox storage helped swing the Galaxy S III pendulum in your favor, and you're a customer of AT&T or Verizon, it's not good news. Droid Life reports that one such expectant customer was asking Dropbox, via its forums, where their storage was. The cloud-space provider informed them that not all carriers are offering the deal, with those two big hitters being among them. This is further confirmed elsewhere on its support pages (check the source). So, just as we thought operators were loosening their grip, it seems some old habits don't die so easily.

Vampire spiders, as the name suggests, like blood. And they feast on blood-filled mosquitoes to get it. But only female mosquitoes suck blood. So how do spiders home in on the ladies?

To find out, researchers, well, took apart a bunch of mosquitoes. Then they mixed and matched body parts. They glued female heads onto male abdomens and male heads onto female bodies, some of which had blood-filled bellies. Then they let the spiders loose near these reassembled specimens, and watched to see which ones the spiders stalked.

As the researchers predicted, the spiders paid close attention to the abdomen, pouncing on the Frankensquitos filled with blood. But the spiders also kept an eye?or eight eyes?on the mosquitoes' heads. Males have lush, feathery antennae. The females aren't as showy. So if the spiders couldn't see the belly they went for female-headed skeeters, presumably for the better odds of scoring blood. The research is in the Journal of Experimental Biology. [Ximena J. Previous studies have shown that blood meals give vampire spiders a perfume that's irresistible to the opposite sex. Now That?s what I call blood lust.

It's Kanye West's 35th birthday and we just didn't know what to get him. After all, what do you buy for the guy who just sold a pair of sneakers on Ebay for upwards of $90,000? You buy him nothing. Instead, Kanye, we treat you to this list of your five biggest missteps thus far in your career. It's our hope that as you round the corner into the latter half of your third decade, you can do so with less focus on scandal, and more focus on your music--which is pretty great. ?

Dating Kim Kardashian
Tempting as it is to pretend this just isn't happening, it appears that Kanye and reality nuptial queen Kim Kardashian are romantically involved. Not that we don't wish them both happiness in their own right, but the track records here for attention-grabbing for the sake of attention-grabbing aren't great. Relationships that work aren't played out in front of cameras. (Do you really need the reminder, Kim?) And now they're already talking about getting married? Help us. Or at the very least, promise if you do get married, it will happen far, far away from any cameras.
Colossally awful tweets?
Most Twitter accounts ought not to be taken too seriously, and Kanye's certainly falls into that category. It's served as a place for ranting against those who pair hoodies with sport coats,??and sometimes offers wise advice, like reminding his 7 million followers "no alcohol before tattoos." But it's also been the perfect place to put his outsized ego on display. "God chose me. He made a path for me. I am God?s vessel. But my greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live," he wrote in 2009.?
Abortion commentary
If ever there was a subject not fit for discussion in 140-character increments, it's the abortion. But that didn't stop Kanye, who actually never said whether he supported it or not, but rather commented on the price of the procedure. His remarks were so outrageous, the fact that they were written on Twitter is almost beside the point. On this occasion, West never apologized.?
'George Bush doesn't care about black people'
He just said WHAT? West went off-script during a portion of the Hurricane Katrina telethon, offering up his opinion of how the then-president was treating African-Americans in the wake of the storm. Did it open up the dialogue about the treatment of Katrina victims? Certainly. Did it do so in a way that would be most productive? Doubtful. Instead of the storm being the?message, Kanye was. In Bush's recent memoir, he wrote that the implication that he was racist was "the worst moment of my presidency."
And the No. 1 biggest misstep: 'I'ma let you finish'
This stage-crash heard around the world barely warrants any additional explanation (but in case you just joined planet Earth and need a rehash of exactly how Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, go here). Despite several apologies (one, likening himself inexplicably to Ben Stiller in "Meet the Parents") this is likely going to follow West around the rest of his life. On the upside, this awful display of manners has given us many years worth of comedy. A Tumblr page devoted to "Kanyegate"? Yes, please.??
