May 19, 1910: Halley's Comet Brushes Earth With Its Tail

halley_630x

1910: Earth passes through the tail of Halley?s comet. The anticipation of its arrival creates quite a stir. In some circles, the comet?s unusually close approach is seen as a sign of impending doom, a notion the down-market press does little to dispel.

The comet was named for British astronomer Edmond Halley, the first to determine its orbit and accurately predict its return to the Earth?s night sky. Although Halley died 16 years before his prediction could be tested, the comet appeared on Christmas night 1758, right on schedule. It?s been Halley?s comet ever since, appearing at regular 74- to 79-year intervals.

The 1910 pass of Earth was especially close and, thanks to expansive newspaper coverage, eagerly anticipated by the general public. In fact, Earth?s orbit carried it through the end of the comet?s 24-million-mile-long tail for six hours on May 19, earning the story the day?s banner headline in The New York Times.

While most reporters of the day turned to astronomers to get the facts straight, the yellow press chose to pursue the story in more fanciful ways, helping to fuel the fears of the impressionable that the end of the world was nigh. Despite some published reports leading up to the event, the comet?s tail did not contain poisonous gases, and there was never any danger of a celestial collision, either.

In anticipation of the comet?s arrival, telescope sales shot up, and hotels in large cities offered special packages that included rooftop viewings. President William Howard Taft had a look-see at the U.S. Naval Observatory and came away suitably impressed. Not everyone was taken in, though: The sitting pope, Pius X, dismissed the entire show as overblown.

The comet was at its closest, therefore its brightest, between May 14 and 22.

We can?t file this item without mentioning Mark Twain?s famous connection to Halley?s comet. Twain (nee Samuel Clemens), America?s pre-eminent man of letters, was born in 1835 as the comet passed over. In 1909, knowing that Halley?s comet was due to make another pass the following year, Twain predicted he would die when it did. Observatory telescopes picked up the comet on April 9, 1910, and followed it as it reached perihelion on April 20. Twain died the next day.

Halley?s comet is scheduled to make its next appearance in late July 2061.

Chef Damien Duquesne Wins Le Menu de Cannes Cook-Off

The competition to win the Palme d?Or wasn?t the only contest at this year?s Cannes film festival. This year also marked the first-ever Le Menu de Cannes cook-off, which came down to a showdown between Gallic flavor and a taste of Russia. And the winner was Parisian chef Damien Duquesne whose website www.750g.com boasts more than 40,000 French recipes. ?
?
?Just as Sundance spawned ChefDance and Berlin birthed Culinary Cinema, Le Menu de Cannes trained its spotlight on international chefs in a cooking face-off staged at the Electrolux-sponsored Agora Lounge adjacent to the Palais. The winner got to prepare lunch at the lounge for Robert De Niro and the rest of the Cannes jury, when they met for their first deliberation meeting on May 16.

At the cooking competition, Agora's cavernous space, appointed with stylized Phillip Starke tables and chairs, was bustling with food stylists, designers, young culinary students and two master chefs -- Duquesne and his Russian counterpart Denis Krupenya, director of Moscow's Culinary School.

Their two teams were given two hours before four judges tasted and then announced the winner of the four-course meal.

Duquesne's menu was designed around a light and flavorful meal. ?The jury keeps a busy schedule and I don't think De Niro would like something too sweet,? he said of his mascarpone raspberry dessert accompanied by a fresh basil granita. Similarly, his main course was fillet of salt cod, lightly grilled and finished in the oven. It was served floating on a light algae broth with asparagus, artichokes and peas.

The piece de resistance of Duquesne?s menu was its potato gallette (pebble) appetizer. A small boiled oval-shaped potato was dipped in a grey-ish sauce made of clay, lactose and squid ink to resemble a pebble. Encrusted with crushed pistachio nuts, the potato was served atop seashells and an actual pebble cradled in a small bowl. Aioli for dipping was served in a small accompanying shell. Judges cautiously worked around the real pebbles. The second course offered a lobster-stuffed squash on a bed of caponata.

While the French food and tablescape was all about romance, Russian chef Krupenya chose the abstraction of artists Kandinsky and Malevich as his inspiration for his traditional dishes. His home-made vodka flavored with dark berry fruits kicked off the first course of a brilliantly deconstructed Borscht. The painted plate was awash with different sauces -- tomato, basil, beetroot, carrot and meat sauce. The bread roll was used not only to soak up the sauces but also so that ?each guest can create his own art,? Krupenya said. A chilled strawberry soup flavored with fresh basil, champagne and honey followed as a palate cleanser. ?Tenderloin of beef in red wine chocolate sauce served as the main course and dessert was berry sponge with carrot jam and Russian jelly.

The competition was the third and final in a cook-off that began a few months ago in Paris. The first two themes of the challenge were ?Lunchtime Bites on Cote D'Azur? and ?Cocktails and Canapes in Cannes 1955.?

The judges for the final competition were Chicago chef Sandra Suria, celebrity stylist Joann Black, chef Phillip Joannes, regional director of L'Enotre, and Marcelo Palmiero, v.p., Electrolux Europe.

?It was a very close call,? Suria said. Both the chefs were equal in their delivery of technique, textures and visuals. The French tablescape inspired by New York's Greenwich Hotel displayed a small photo of a painting done by De Niro's father. The original painting hangs in the hotel. ?That was a personal touch,? said Suria. And the use of mascarpone and basil sorbet she thought was a nostalgic touch De Niro could appreciate. ?That was a nice ending,? she added.

Concert Veteran Promotes Tennis Legends Like Rock Stars

NEW YORK -- Famous tennis stars over the age of 30 have a lot in common with rock stars. So says Larry Magid, who has promoted and produced more than 16,000 concerts and live events with the likes of Bette Midler, Stevie Wonder, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams and the Allman Brothers.

The live event promoter and producer, who also produced the U.S. portions of Live Aid, among other things, has been tapped to produce and promote the Champions Series, a 12-city tour this fall for seven tennis legends over the age of 30: Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, Michael Chang, Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander. Competitors must all have been ranked No. 1 in the world or been a grand slam singles champion.

While the Champions Series is not new, this is the first year that it has been condensed to a five-week season. Last year's series also had a different format with multiday events played in fewer cities. Magid said the final day of those events typically attracted the biggest audiences. And it was a more demanding schedule for the players.

The circuit this year also covers more ground with 12 one-night mini tournaments in cities across the nation, including cities that don't have regular tournaments. It also has fewer stars than last year when the seven players of this season were also joined by such names as Jimmy Arias, Aaron Krickstein, Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg, Wayne Ferreira, Mark Phillippoussis, Marat Safin and others.

"These players have achieved rock-star status and transcend the sport of tennis," explained Magid of the more focused roster. "They are the most talented and accomplished athletes of their generation as well as great entertainers." And, he said, "they are fascinating people, especially Agassi and McEnroe, that people outside of the sport also respond to."

Or as Courier said in a recent blog post on the series' website: "What a cast of characters."

The circuit was founded in 2005 by InsideOut Sports + Entertainment, a New York based firm co-owned and operated by Jon Venison, a former executive of live entertainment firm SFX, and former world No. 1 Courier.

The new one-night tournaments allow bigger-name talent to compete nightly, which the Champions Series hopes will bring it its best season by far this year, a spokeswoman said without detailing figures.

Magid, who has made a three-year commitment to the organization, says selling tickets is all about packaging and promoting to people beyond traditional tennis circles.

"They called me to ask if I would take on this task, and the more I spoke to them, the more I realized that these guys are rock stars. They have transcended the sport," explained Magid of how he came on board. "And I think the music and tennis audiences overlap. So, we are going after an audience that accepts this tour not only as tennis, but as an event, and that is intrigued by seeing these stars play against each other again."

After all, "Agassi playing Sampras was pretty dramatic, and you didn't have to be a tennis fan to know they were competing to be the best," he argued. "It provided for great drama. I am not [a core tennis] fan, but I would watch the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, because I thought it was high drama -- like a movie."

Ford, Google Team Up to Make Smarter Cars

Ford is joining Google to develop cars smart enough to know where you?re going and how best to get you there so you aren?t wasting time in traffic.

The automaker is tapping the power of Google?s remarkable Prediction API to create cars that determine where we?re going by examining where we?ve been. It?s the latest example of the auto industry calling on Silicon Valley as software takes on more tasks in our cars. It also underscores the tech sector?s growing interest in the automotive sector as Microsoft, Cisco and IBM develop new technologies and markets.

Ford has been way out in front in this arena since introducing Ford Sync in 2007, and the Google partnership announced today at the tech titan?s I/O developer conference could strengthen its lead.

In a nutshell, the Prediction API provides pattern-matching capabilities to existing cloud-based data sets, using it to ?predict? probable outcomes for current events. Using it in an automotive setting would allow our cars to effectively learn from our behavior and adapt to it.

?We take examples from the past and apply machine algorithm learning to find the best model that fits the situation,? Travis Green, Google?s Prediction API product manager, said.

So in theory, if you opt in to using the service, a computer in your car would create an encrypted record of your driving data ? where you?ve gone, when you?ve gone there and what route you took ? and tailor it to your driving profile. Eventually, your car ?remembers? where and how you drive.

Using that information, it can tap the Google Prediction engine to analyze huge data sets and get a sense of where you might be headed when, say, you start the engine at 5:15 p.m., then suggest an ideal route to avoid congestion or other headaches.

But that?s not all. The car would then optimize itself for the trip ? Ford didn?t say exactly how ? to adjust the powertrain and improve fuel efficiency.

?Once the destination is confirmed, the vehicle would have instant access to a variety of real-time information so it can optimize its performance, even against factors that the driver may not be aware of,? said Ryan McGee, who works within Ford?s vehicle controls architecture and algorithm design division. ?This information can ultimately be used to optimize vehicle performance attributes such as fuel efficiency and driveability.?

It?s all still highly theoretical, and still in the preliminary stages of R&D. But Ford is applying the Google Prediction API to two years of in-house driving data. It almost certainly will be years before we see cars with this sort of technology, but Ford says it is committed to the project.

?Ultimately, we?re looking to make cars smarter,? McGee said. ?We?re looking to make them more efficient.?

Frenchie Davis: 'Idol' 'Scared the Hell Out of Me'

For The Voice?s Frenchie Davis, being the subject of tabloid fodder was a good thing.

?Ending up on the cover of the National Enquirer for being fat is the best thing that could have ever happened to me because it made me have an epiphany that being afraid of putting myself out there isn?t protecting me from the scrutiny so I might as well go balls to the wall for my dream because they?re going to come for me anyway,? the former American Idol contestant said during a conference call with reporters Tuesday.

The singer, who was 23 when she was disqualified from Fox?s American Idol after topless photos taken before her turn on the reality series surfaced, returned to primetime on NBC?s new competition last week when the show?s Christina Aguilera selected the singer as part of her team of eight singers.

?There was a part of my life when I had allowed what happened with Idol to scare the hell out of me and there was a part of me that was afraid to really take a chance,? said Davis, who in the past nine years has performed in Rent on Broadway. ?Broadway was safe for me.?

But for the singer who turns 32 on Saturday, The Voice is far from being her last shot at making it.

?I don?t see anything as a last shot -- I?m sure that some people saw Idol as my last shot and clearly it was not,? she said, noting that Aguilera has been ?kind of a mamma bear? when it comes to serving as her coach. ?What this show is about for me is not about necessarily winning. When I left Idol, most people remembered me because of the scandal. If I couldn?t sing, then maybe I could live with that.

?What this show represents for me is a chance to reintroduce my talent to the world because they didn?t get to see it in the two minutes of airtime I was on Idol,? she said. ?It?s a chance to reintroduce the full extent of my talent to the world and this time, win or lose, I?ll walk away being remembered for my talent and nothing else.?

The Voice airs Tuesdays on NBC.

Best Rare Minerals: Armalcolite, Tugtupite and More

Illustration: Jesse Lenz

Tugtupite is sold as an aphrodisiac.
Illustration: Jesse Lenz

Most of those ?rare earth? elements in the periodic table aren?t really that rare. Yttrium? Pshaw. You probably have some in your TV screen. Here are some of our favorite minerals that actually are uncommon.

Dienerite
A single piece was purportedly found in Austria in the 1920s. It has since vanished, and mineralogists debate whether it ever existed.

Armalcolite
These tiny gray crystals were named for astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins, who collected them on the moon. A few samples have been mined on Earth.

Herbertsmithite
Found at just a few spots in the world, this unassuming greenish compound has weird electronic properties that could hold the key to quantum computing.

Wawayandaite
The only known sample, a bundle of winding white crystals, was discovered in New Jersey. They should have called it Fuhgeddabout-ite.

Bromellite
Or beryllium oxide. It?s nearly as hard as diamonds. Several gems have been cut from the one large sample found in Sri Lanka.

Tugtupite
The Inuit call it ?reindeer blood.? Add sunlight and it turns from white to pink. Found in arctic regions?and crystal shops, where it?s sold as an aphrodisiac.

Tools wipe location data from (some) iPhones

Want to wipe location-tracking data that's being stored on your iPhone without your permission? There's an app for that, but you've got to jailbreak your iPhone first.

Several tools have cropped up as a fix for people riled up about the fact that iPhones (and iPads) are surreptitiously logging unencrypted location-related data on the device, including cell tower coordinates, time stamps, cell operator and Wi-Fi networks used, and longitude and latitude from GPS signals--basically a when-and-where of your phone's location going back at least a year.

Police have known about and been using this information, and cellular operators have access to it and can provide it when served with a court order. But anyone with physical access to the phone (and access to a desktop backup of the data) is now able to see an iPhone owner's whereabouts over time.

The fact that consumers don't realize that their phones are recording and storing this information in clear text has come as a big surprise to many people, including consumer advocates who say it's a big privacy violation.

You can hide the data that may be on your desktop by encrypting your iTunes backups. And you can turn off GPS to stop the logging of at least that information, but that doesn't clean up any data stored on the device, and it will severely limit use of the device for location-based services like mapping. There is no way to disable the tracking, because it's baked into the operating system.

The only option at this point is to use one of the programs written specifically to delete the data. But, as unapproved iPhone apps that reach into the iOS functions, they're not available through Apple's official App Store. They're unsanctioned apps that run only on iPhones that have been jailbroken--devices in which the operating system has been unlocked so owners can run any application they want.

Canadian programmer Ryan Petrich released a tool Wednesday called Untrackerd, which deletes the location-tracking information from the device. The app runs on iOS 4.0 and higher and installs a so-called "daemon" program that runs in the background, continuously cleaning up the data in the "consolidated.db" file where it is stored. "No new icons are added to your homescreen," according to the description on TheBigBoss.org. "There are no options to configure."

Untrackerd, which also is available from the Cydia third-party app store, deletes any data more than 30 minutes old from the consolidated.db file, checking every 5 minutes (except when the phone is in sleep mode) for changes to the file. The most recent data is left intact so the device can still pinpoint the phone's location for driving directions, for example, Petrich told CNET today.

The app does not zero out the deleted data multiple times, as is necessary to prevent bit-level analysis during forensics from unearthing data written to permanent storage. Meanwhile, whatever Untrackerd deletes on the device gets mirrored when the desktop sync is performed, he said.

"I did not make any attempt to make sure it is completely wiped from the disk or [to] wipe any other private data," said Petrich, an Edmonton-based software programmer for mobile ad company Medialets. "I try to maintain the functionality of consolidated.db...[which is used] to improve the performance of location services."

Asked why he wrote the tool, Petrich said: "I created it because I wasn't 100 percent comfortable with the entire history of my location being stored on a device that is very easy to lose."

Another tool, Location Blocker, goes further and wipes all historical data from the consolidated.db file and also blocks the device from storing any further cell and Wi-Fi location data. Step-by-step instructions for installing it are here.

Petrich said he didn't know of any other tools that would help iPhone users get rid of this data. He also said he didn't know why Apple was logging the data but said he doubts it is for malicious purposes because "it's not being transported anywhere."

Update 5:27 p.m. PT: After talking to CNET, Petrich updated Untrackerd this afternoon so that it will securely delete the data it wipes, writing over the disk space with zeros several times so deleted data cannot be forensically uncovered later.

Vitor Belfort vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama Set for UFC 133 in Philadelphia

    • Mike Chiappetta
    • MMA Writer
Vitor Belfort will look to bounce back into the win column after suffering a loss in his recent middleweight championship fight, when he takes on Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 133.

The match was confirmed by UFC president Dana White to ESPN UK.

White also confirmed the event would take place in Philadelphia on August 6, as first reported by MMA Fighting back in February.

Belfort (19-9) was knocked out in the first-round of his title fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 126, a loss that snapped a five-fight win streak. Afterward, he had been expected to make his return against Wanderlei Silva, but that plan was eventually scrapped.

Meanwhile, Akiyama will be hoping to put an end to a two-fight losing streak. Two previously rumored fights never materialized due to various reasons. A matchup with Chael Sonnen was tabled due to Sonnen's suspension, while he later pulled out of a matchup with Nate Marquardt after the recent devastating natural disasters struck his home country of Japan.

Other announced bouts so far include Jorge Rivera vs. Alessio Sakara and Michael McDonald vs. Nick Pace.

Ford makes list of the 25 most EV-friendly cities, still likes selling cars to residents elsewhere

So, you saw a Volt, Leaf, or Focus Electric and were convinced to go green, but are unsure whether your local municipality is as eco-friendly as you are. Well, Ford has done your homework for you (without even demanding your lunch money in return), and identified the "25 Most Electric Vehicle-Ready Cities" in the US. What makes a metropolis worthy of such status in the eyes of the Blue Oval boys? A utilities structure that allows off-peak charging, for starters, plus reduced red tape for getting your EV permits and inspections, incentives for offsetting up-front customer costs, urban plans for charging infrastructure, and EV-friendly city advisory committees. If your town's lacking in those areas, perhaps it's time to give your city counsel a ring -- part of being an eco-warrior is political activism, right? PR's after the break.

Continental readies stereo camera system for 'seeing' cars

The idea of cars preventing accidents before they happen isn't novel, but at the end of the day, collision detection systems are only as smart as the information being fed to them. That's the ethos behind Continental's new stereo camera system, which spots people, pets, and other objects in a vehicle's path, and measures their height, distance from the vehicle, and how they might be moving. This rig, which will be just another part of Continental's ContiGuard safety system, uses the difference in the lenses' optical paths to make these calculations -- so long as those obstacles are 20 to 30 meters (66 to 98 feet) away. The company also says the cameras are sharp enough to detect partially obscured objects, and claims accuracy within 20 to 30 centimeters (8 to 12 inches). No word on when it will be ready to ship seeing cars, though if the press release is any indication, German drivers are likely to get their test drive first.

AMD Delivers Embedded Radeon 6760 With Multi-Display, OpenCL Support

Yesterday, at the Embedded Systems Conference, AMD announced a new embedded Radeon GPU, the E6760. Unlike its previous offerings in this segment, the E6760 is capable of driving up to six displays and supports OpenCL. "The AMD Radeon E6760 GPU provides customers with superior business economics through long lifecycle management and product stability,? said Richard Jaenicke, director of Embedded Client Business for AMD. ?Embedded system designers faced with power and density constraints now have a solution that delivers the advanced 3D graphics and multimedia features they require in this performance-driven market.

The embedded systems market is enormous; it encompasses ATMs, arcade/3D games, to industrial applications. While the needs of these systems are typically modest, AMD is trying to upsell the value and flexibility of its Radeon series into potentially receptive markets.

We remember when enthusiast video cards had stats like those above.

The E6760 also adds support for UVD (Universal Video Decoder) 3. This continues AMD's policy of making its 6000-series UVD3 compatible, with the possible exception of the 6700 series (these are relabeled 5700 cards that may not have UVD 3 support). As for its displays, the E6760 can drive four displays using DisplayPort 1.1 and six displays using DP 1.2. It's maximum supported resolution per display is 4096x2160, and HDMI 1.3 is also supported.

AMD also spends some time talking up Stream (now known as ATI App Acceleration.) The company's decision to do so jives with what it told us last week; AMD is ready to focus on GPGPU in a more serious way. Part of its strategy is to focus on every aspect of the market, from high-end HPC work to mid-range client applications down to embedded systems and the mobile market.

The 6760 is best thought of as one member of a family?AMD's goal is to increase Llano's attractiveness in the mainstream market while extending benefits to all of its segments. It may even be possible to hook Llano's GPU up to an E6760; the company's press release notes: "The AMD Radeon E6760 GPU can be paired with AMD?s upcoming high-performance A-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APU) codenamed ?Llano? to offer additional graphics capability and additional parallel computing power."

AMD brought the ability to link discrete and integrated GPUs years ago. The tech has mostly sat unnoticed since, but it's fair to guess that Sunnyvale would prefer to give users the option to link dGPU and iGPU whenever doing so might result in improved performance. Given the recent OpenCL conference AMD has announced, we expect to hear more about the company's plans for Llano and APU's in general in the near future.

A Nephew's Quest: Who Was Brother Claude Ely?

Brother Claude Ely, pictured in 1953 in front of the Letcher County Courthouse in Whitesburg, Ky.

In 2001, Macel Ely ? the great-nephew of the late gospel singer Brother Claude Ely ? went on a vacation to London. He went to a record shop and recognized the music being played over the intercom as his Uncle Claude's music.

Ely asked the store manager, "Are you playing Claude Ely's music?" The manager took Macel down the aisle to a display of Brother Claude Ely: a blown-up picture, and a selection of old 45s and LP albums.

Ely stood in the store for an hour, watching people coming in the store and buying his uncle's music.

"It really freaked me out, to be perfectly honest," he says.

Ely says he had grown up hearing his uncle singing and preaching and praying, and to him, it was just the same screaming and shouting that he had grown up hearing in church.

"I had no idea that outside of those Appalachian Mountains, people had heard about Brother Claude Ely," he says.

So 50 years after these recordings, Ely decided to find out who his great-uncle really was.

A Song On Claude's Deathbed

Ely began to drive through small eastern Kentucky towns, stopping in Pentecostal churches, knocking on the door and asking if there was anyone there he could speak to, and if he could record them.

And he would ask people, did you ever hear of a man named Claude Ely?

In all, Ely visited hundreds of churches over thousands of miles. Over nine years, he interviewed nearly 1,400 people.

Linda Morgan said she remembered meeting Brother Claude Ely at a tent revival in Cumberland, Ky. Others remember his singing.

When Brother Claude Ely would get up to sing, I mean he would just get a key on the guitar and when he started singing, it was like the heavens would open up.

Claude Ely was born in 1922 in Puckett's Creek, Va. When he was 12 years old, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and told that he was going to die as a child. His uncle Leander gave him an old guitar, which he would practice on his sickbed.

"Even as a child, he really had a very strong personal relationship with God," says Roberta Pratt, who was a member of the Cumberland Pentecostal church and knew the family.

When he was sick, Pratt says, Claude's family gathered in his room where he was in bed and prayed for him. And then, according to Pratt, Claude said, "I'm not going to die." And he started singing a song.

Ely says he learned that the family felt that God had supernaturally healed Claude. And they believed that God had given him a song: "There Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold my Body Down."

The song became an anthem among Pentecostal people in the Appalachian Mountains.

And it was one of the last recordings Johnny Cash made before his death.

The song was "just a plain, simple song that we'll never have to face eternity without God," says Terry Mont, who also knew Claude Ely. "It's a hope song."

Healing Powers

As an adult, Claude Ely went on the road. He traveled from city to city, wearing a cowboy hat and a white suit. He was a heavyset person, with a gold front tooth. His nickname was "The Gospel Ranger."

He would drive a car, steering it with one hand, and with the other he would announce with a bullhorn, "Later tonight at 7:00, I'll have a tent set up in the middle of town, please come out and experience the fire and Holy Ghost."

Mont remembers that the way Claude Ely carried himself, with an old guitar slung on his back, and a big smile. Claude Ely didn't disappoint anyone when he came to town.

Morgan recalls having trouble with her back as a child. She got in a prayer line at a Brother Claude Ely revival, and she says she was healed.

Dennis Hensley traveled with Brother Claude Ely, playing lead guitar for him in his revivals.

"When Brother Claude Ely would get up to sing, I mean he would just get a key on the guitar and when he started singing, it was like the heavens would open up," he says.

People would show up to revivals because they had heard about this country singer who sang like a black man. Brother Claude Ely would thrash his guitar, shake and gyrate from one part of the stage to the other. Young men would run up to wipe the sweat off his forehead.

Gladys Presley, Elvis' mother, was a fan of Brother Claude Ely's ministry, and some people remember Gladys and Elvis getting blessed at Brother Claude Ely tent revivals while Brother Claude Ely laid hands on them and prayed for them.

Kevin Fontenot, an expert on country music history at Tulane University, says that in 1953, King Records heard about Brother Claude Ely. The company decided to record him live at a Pentecostal service in the courthouse in Letcher County, Ky., when he was holding a revival. King Records set up equipment in the courthouse and made the initial recordings that made Brother Claude Ely popular. And Fontenot says that those recordings were a very valuable historical document because they were the first time people really got to hear a recording of a live Pentecostal service.

Pratt remembers that the courthouse was packed with people saying amen and clapping their hands.

"Pentecostals clap off the beat," she says. "We prefer our style of handclapping."

Fontenot says that it might be hard to tease out where different musical traditions come from. But he believes that Pentecostal music had an impact on rock 'n' roll. He says you can hear that impact in Brother Claude Ely's music.

Many of the early rockers ? Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash ? all grew up in the Pentecostal church, according to Hensley.

'Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down'

Brother Claude Ely died nearly 33 years ago on May 7, 1978. He was playing the organ at his church in Newport, Ky. A tape recorder that someone brought to record parts of the service captured his death.

Brother Claude Ely started singing the song "Where Could I Go But To The Lord." Halfway through, he fell backward.

On the amateur recording, you can hear screaming and the moaning as people prayed for Brother Claude Ely. He died of a heart attack in front of his entire congregation.

Hensley notes that since Brother Claude Ely's death, there have been many artists who've recorded "Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down."

"It just makes you feel good to know that a little country preacher from down in Virginia wrote that song," he says, "and it's pretty much went all over the world."

A few years ago, Macel went to the cemetery in Dryden, Va., where Brother Claude Ely was buried.

When he arrived, there was a handwritten note taped on the cemetery plot. It said, "Dear Brother Ely, You sung it and preached it to us. I know one day you'll come up out of this here ground. Thank you for being so good to us. It made a big difference and we won't forget it."

Olympus still loving E-series DSLRs, but teases new Micro Four Thirds lenses to confuse you

The Micro Four Thirds form factor may be a compelling choice for those seeking portability with affordable prices and notable quality, but there's no doubt that many folks are still loyal to the conventional DSLRs. If you're one such Olympus fan who's concerned about the fate of the larger E-series lineup, fret not: Akira Watanabe, head of product development, reassured PCPOP that the E-series models are here to stay because of their unique features, though his team's still pondering over the idea of replacing the budget triple-digit line (like the E-620) with the PEN series, as suggested by his colleague previously. But shifting the focus back to PEN, Watanabe teased that his crew's developing some MFT lenses to boost the portfolio, though little is revealed other than that these will cater users who have specific photographic needs. Very intriguing indeed -- maybe some fisheye and tilt-shift love?

Netflix Shares Decline After First-Quarter Results

Jason Kempin/Getty Images

NEW YORK ? Shares of Netflix, which have been flying high, opened lower on Tuesday after the company reported better-than-expected first-quarter results late Monday, but its second-quarter outlook disappointed Wall Street observers.

Analyst reviews ranged from positive ? including some price target increases - to neutral to concerned, with one recurring theme though being that Netflix?s market value may have gotten ahead of itself.

As of 10am ET, the stock traded at $240.82, down 4.3 percent, after the stock earlier dropped as low as $235.19. The stock has traded between $90 and $254.98 over the past year.

Ahead of its earnings report, Netflix, led by CEO Reed Hastings, was ?priced for close to perfection,? said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett who has a ?neutral? rating on the stock. ?The report was a step short of that, which may pressure these volatile shares?with a high valuation overshadowing still robust fundamentals,? he said.

In one of the clearest Wall Street reactions, Janney Montgomery Scott analyst Tony Wible downgraded Netflix shares to ?sell? in a report entitled ?Headwinds Trump Momentum.?

?It will be increasingly more difficult to support its high valuation,? he wrote, citing such concerns as an expected slowing of U.S. subscriber growth ahead and ?an increase in competition that will likely trigger an increase in content costs and subscriber acquisition costs.?

He also expressed disappointment with management?s limited disclosures, including a lack of a full-year forecast.

Meanwhile, BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Williams maintained his ?market perform? rating, similar to a ?neutral,? saying: ?We are raising our 2011 estimates to account for the beat in the quarter, partially offset by investments in content and international expansion.?

Google's Search Tweak Puts A Company At Risk

To boost its placement in search results under Google's revamped search formula, onewayfurniture.com is jazzing up the descriptions for each of the company's more than 30,000 products ? including its large inventory of bar stools.
One Way Furniture

To boost its placement in search results under Google's revamped search formula, onewayfurniture.com is jazzing up the descriptions for each of the company's more than 30,000 products ? including its large inventory of bar stools.

Lots of websites churn out thousands of low-quality articles for the online ad revenue. Google's not too happy about these so-called content farms showing up in your search results, so recently it struck back.

On Feb. 24, the Internet giant changed the formula it uses to generate search results, with a change code named "Panda." Now, when you search for, say, a leather sofa, your results look very different from the way they looked two months ago: They are largely the same results, but in a different order.

This new ordering of Google's search results is having some serious real-life consequences.

There's an expression, 80 percent of success is showing up. Well, Mitch Lieberman says that it's just not true. "It's a matter of who appears before the other one," he says.

Lieberman has a corner office on New York's Long Island. He sells furniture. In his business, though, there's no warehouse. He's the middleman, aggregating, say, couches, from more than one manufacturer in one place online ? think Amazon for chairs and tables. It's called One Way Furniture. And if your entire store is online, then visibility in search results is everything.

A few days after Feb. 24, Lieberman got an email. "Someone, a competitor of mine actually, sent me a list," he says. "It showed that One Way Furniture was in the top 100 for the biggest drop, you know, in rankings."

Immediately, Lieberman pulled up his traffic numbers. He found that two-thirds of his customers had disappeared.

"As days went by, and I saw that dip in the graph was holding ? and it was a cliff ? it was really a shocking drop," he says. "My first reaction was not to panic, try to find articles related to this Panda update. What is it about?"

Lieberman formed a support group of sorts with other competitors who'd been badly hit by the change. They called and emailed back and forth, desperate to parse Google's intent.

"Kind of like the Fed chairman," he says. "When he speaks, everybody listens for every single word that he's saying, looking for hints and clues."

It took a few weeks, but Lieberman came up with a plan. "I decided I can't dig deeper than what's on the surface," he says. "Google is saying over and over again: 'Content. It's related to content.' That's where I need to shift my focus."

Indeed, the Google update was aimed at pushing low-quality content out of top search results.

Lieberman figures the main reason his site got caught in the dragnet is that he pulls product descriptions from other manufacturers ? so Google's new formula thinks the writing on his site isn't original.

"We all wanted to believe it was something else," he says. "Because rewriting the content is a tremendous task, when you have 35,000 pages."

All those pages showcase dozens of individual pieces of furniture. Lauren Fernstrom is one of the writers tasked with rewriting the product descriptions of each of these items. She writes 20 in an hour. (That's three minutes per item.) And the rewrites cost Lieberman about $1 per barstool. But each item on the site ? and there are a lot of them ? gets the makeover.

"We want to give it more romance," he says. "We want customers to imagine sitting on [a] warm summer's day, drinking their favorite beverage, sitting on that particular stool."

This is not the only change Lieberman will have to make. He's looking at possible furloughs or cuts.

Google controls 70 percent of search in this country. Was this its intent? That a furniture seller romance each bar stool?

In a word, yes.

"The sites that do put a little bit more individual care and attention and work into the content of their site ? whether it be a product description, or a blog post," says Matt Cutts, Google's lead engineer on the Panda update, "those are the ones that users tend to prefer a little bit more and appreciate."

Cutts says it's unfortunate, but these are the breaks. An algorithm doesn't make exceptions.

So Lieberman will be paying outside contractors like Fernstrom a buck a description for the rest of the summer. She's got to be on her game.

"The best thing to do is take a deep breath before you move on to every product," she says.

So far, 7,000 descriptions are in, with 25,000 to go. Google will re-rank One Way Furniture, or not, in the next few months.

Who Really Could Take Steve Carell's Place on 'The Office'?

After 148 episodes and five Emmy nominations, Steve Carell?s Michael Scott is leaving Dundler-Mifflin and The Office is seeing him off with an hourlong sendoff Thursday night. While speculation continues to swirl around who will replace the wry office manager, several notable guest stars will be heading to Scranton for the series three remaining Season 7 episodes before a new boss is crowned ahead of its already announced eighth season.
?
So who?s most likely to take over Carell?s gig on The Office? THR takes a look at all the Office-bound guest stars to see if there?s room in their schedules for the NBC comedy.
?
Ricky Gervais
Office work: Gervais? David Brent first appeared on the NBC comedy in January, reprising his role from the original British series in a cameo where he bumped into Michael by the elevator. He?s set to make his second appearance in the season finale.
?
Upcoming: He?s set to appear in Disney?s The Muppets and lend his voice to WETA?s live-action/animatronic adaptation of The Wind in the Willows. He?s also writing (with Matt Selman), executive producing and appearing in Universal?s Flanimals as well as the BBC sitcom Life?s Too Short. Plus the Science Channel recently picked up his adventure series Idiot Abroad for a second season and HBO has added a third season of The Ricky Gervais Show.
?
Will Ferrell
Office work: Ferrell first appeared as Deangelo Vickers, Michael?s temporary replacement at Dundler-Mifflin?s Scranton branch, on April 14. Critics were impressed with his more muted performance and praised his chemistry with the cast. His arc is reportedly ending with the finale.
?
Upcoming: He?s executive producing Comedy Central?s sketch series Jon Benjamin Has a Van, set for summer; is in postproduction on Casa de mi Padre, and is filming Tim and Eric?s Billion Dollar Movie as well as producing Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, both of which are due next year. In addition, he has roles in four films -- including a comedic take on Sherlock Holmes opposite Sacha Baron Cohen for Columbia -- and is producing six, likely to keep him occupied through 2014.
?
Will Arnett
Office work: Among the throng of guest stars slated to appear in the Season 7 finale.
?
Upcoming: While Running Wilde may not have worked out with Fox, Arnett has signed on to play Christina Applegate?s stay-at-home husband in NBC?s untitled Emily Spivey comedy project from Lorne Michaels. Then there?s the rumored Arrested Development feature.
?
Jim Carrey

Office work: Also signed on for the finale.
?
Upcoming: The Fox feature Mr. Popper?s Penguins is set for a June release and he has at least five other projects he?s signed on to through 2013, including Me Time, Sober Buddies and Damn Yankees, opposite Jake Gyllenhaal.
?
Ray Romano
Office work: Part of the star-studded finale.
?
Upcoming: Romano is set for Fox?s Ice Age: Continental Drift sequel, due in July 2012, and Season 2 of TNT?s Men of a Certain Age bows June 1. No announcement has been made for Season 3.
?
Catherine Tate
Office work: Finale bound.
?
Upcoming: The Doctor Who actress has Monte Carlo with Leighton Meester due in July and appears to have a clear schedule beyond the Fox 2000 adventure.
?
James Spader
Office work: Appearing in the finale.
?

Motorola Xoom LTE update delayed until summer, same time as Bionic launch
Motorola's just finished giving the news and the numbers on its quarterly financial report, and there was one bit of badness that we just had to share: the Xoom LTE upgrade has been delayed. We won't be seeing it until summer according to Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, which is also when we'll be seeing the Bionic, a delay that we were already sulking about. Jha was a little vague about what the "issue" was that is causing the delay, only that whatever quality concern there is applies to both devices, and it could simply be that the company is waiting for its LTE rollout to get a little further along. Net result: one less G for Xoom owners until the summer, and no Bionic at all until then. Bummer.

In terms of the numbers: Motorola says that it shipped over 250,000 Xooms in the first quarter of the year, and managed net revenues of $3 billion. That's up 22 percent from this time last year, which brought losses down to $.27 per share -- much nicer than the $.72 in Q1 2010. Mobile device revenues were up 30 percent and 9.1 million total mobile devices were sold, of those almost half (4.1 million) were smartphones.

DS Lite discontinued at GameStop

We caught wind of an internal GameStop memo this morning announcing the discontinuation of Nintendo's DS Lite. The memo (pictured above) asks employees to remove displays of Crimson, Black, and Metallic Rose models, once they've burned through their stock -- we've since confirmed the fact with an employee of the gaming chain. Not a huge shocker, of course, given the fact that the five-year-old system has since been eclipsed by 2009's DSi and, more recently, the company's glasses-free 3D portable, the 3DS. We have reached out to Nintendo for comment on the matter and will update this post with official word once received.

Update: We heard back from Nintendo, receiving the usual "Nintendo doesn't comment on rumor and speculation."
